War puts Iran’s nuclear ambiguity under scrutiny
A revisionist argument is emerging in Tehran over Iran’s nuclear strategy:
that its longstanding policy of nuclear ambiguity failed its most important
test when it did not deter the United States and Israel from attacking, and
should now be reconsidered. Nezamoddin Mousavi, a former conservative
lawmaker with longstanding ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
(IRGC), gave unusually explicit expression to that argument this week,
declaring that “nuclear ambiguity did not prevent war” and raising the
prospect of revisiting Iran’s nuclear doctrine and even its membership in
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
