Fears of delay grow over removal of Fife nuclear submarine reactor

A FIFE councillor and anti-nuclear campaigners are demanding answers over plans to remove the most radioactive part of a decommissioned nuclear
submarine from Rosyth Dockyard. Councillor Brian Goodall says Babcock and
the Ministry of Defence urgently need to clarify when a reactor pressure
vessel, a highly radioactive component from a decommissioned submarine,
will be removed from Rosyth. It’s something that UK defence minister Luke
Pollard said should be done by the end of 2026, adding that his
department “remains committed” to the deadline. The issue in question
refers to the dismantling of the retired Royal Navy nuclear-powered
submarine HMS Swiftsure. It’s part of the UK’s Submarine Dismantling
Project, which should be completed by October 2028.
