How safe are Britain’s military bases from hostile states?

The UK’s most sensitive sites are increasingly vulnerable to rapidly evolving weapons and surveillance systems and in some cases only have police protection

Armed only with explosives and machineguns, it was the SAS who pioneered
hit-and-run raids on Axis airbases across the North African desert during
the Second World War. Striking planes while they were parked on poorly
guarded airstrips was a stroke of genius that forced the Nazis to overhaul
their defences as daring squads of British operatives destroyed hundreds of
German and Italian aircraft before they could take to the skies. Drones,
advanced missiles, “grey zone” operations and militant activism are now
prompting a similarly urgent transformation of how British bases are
protected. From the Cotswolds to the Middle East, our most sensitive sites
are increasingly vulnerable to the rapidly evolving weapons and
surveillance systems used by hostile states.
