Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) and SGE at Oldbury: land interest dispute and SMR site risks for engineers

Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) says it has no record of any
approach from small modular reactor (SMR) developer SGE about acquiring
land at the former Oldbury nuclear power station site for new SMR units.

SGE maintains it lodged an “indicative interest” in purchasing the
Oldbury land, which previously hosted twin Magnox reactors, as part of its
UK deployment plans. The dispute leaves ownership clarity and programme
timing for any SMR build at Oldbury unresolved, complicating early-stage
site assessment and grid-connection planning.

GBE‑N’s lack of record of
SGE’s interest in Oldbury comes as the agency is already managing a nuclear
commercial pipeline of up to £4.6bn, suggesting it will prioritise
counterparties that align cleanly with its structured SMR programme rather
than unsolicited approaches.

With Jacobs already engaged on planning and
consenting for GBE‑N’s proposed SMR fleet, any credible bid for Oldbury
is likely to be assessed against a system-wide siting and sequencing
strategy rather than on a standalone site-opportunity basis. Across our 915
