Saudi Arabia in no hurry to bow to Trump’s demands on nuclear deal

For decades, Arab states held fast to the belief that the road to America
goes through Israel. Establishing ties with their Jewish neighbour, so the
theory went, was the surest way to gain the White House’s favour.

The Saudi-American agreement on nuclear co-operation announced last month tests that theory. A day after the deal was signed, President Trump, stung by
Israeli criticism, added a new condition. There would be no civil nuclear
plant for Saudi Arabia unless the kingdom joined his Abraham Accords, the
agreements under which the Gulf states would make peace with Israel.

The belated demand has thrown the future of the agreement into doubt. Officials
and analysts say the slow process to have the deal ratified by the US
Congress is under way, but the White House has tied itself into knots by
announcing a new condition that was not in the original agreement.
