#WETOOARE PROTESTERS   FREE JULIAN ASSANGE

https://weetoo.home.blog/We are a group of mothers, fathers, teachers and students from all over the world, and we are extremely worried about the health condition, as well as the violations of the most basic human rights, of journalist and editor Julian Assange.

The award-winning journalist, in fact, has been held for months in isolation in the maximum security of Belmarsh Prison waiting for extradition to the United States where, confirmed by United Nations experts, it will be difficult for him to have a fair trial and where he risks up to 175 years in prison or even the death penalty.

The motive for the indictment was made mainly by his having published military documents confirming corruption and atrocious war crimes; in particular his website Wikileaks documents show how the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that have massacred millions of people were created by governments for economic interests and for the exploitation of resources. In these territories the number of terrorists has  increased exponentially. Not only that, Assange unveiled the conditions of Guantanamo prisoners, abuses of every type, and tens of thousands of civilian homicides in Iraq and Afghanistan by the American army, including the assassination of two Reuters journalists all documented in the chilling video, Collateral Murder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rXPrfnU3G0&t=59s

In Julian Assange’s long and frightening persecution, we witnessed seven years of systematic violation of his human rights. The right of citizens to question public interests was also completely ignored. Now, we refuse to participate in a further extension of psychological and physical torture perpetrated against the journalist, as reported by Nils Melzer, the special reporter of the United Nations, who found Assange in a condition of extremely troublesome health.

We refuse also to encourage the authority of countries that are allowing this dramatic development, particularly the UK, having deprived the right to liberty for a journalist who was practising his profession, besides depriving him of the right to a fair trial, the right to take care of his own health. At the same time, this signals a very dangerous precedent for freedom of expression and freedom of the press. The numerous calls for his immediate release by the United Nations, by all the principal organizations of human rights, by international doctors, journalists, and petitions from people and civil society were not considered by authorities. This is why we believe it is essential for the present and above all for the future of democracy in the United Kingdom, as well as on the rest of the world, that students, teachers and all the citizens of the world to take a clear position in favor of the human rights of the political prisoner Julian Assange, and to do all that is possible to pressure British institutions.

There are many ways to claim justice for Assange and to protect the most elementary rights. One of these can be, for example, to write an email to the Members of the Interior in your own words. Your opinion matters. All those who take the time to write a letter will let the British government know that there are dozens more people who think in the same way. Therefore, a few hundred letters can make an enormous difference. We have outlined a few ideas, the UK Interior Secretary to respect and protect the human rights of Julian Assange. Feel free to add these points to yours and express why you think Julian Assange deserves proper care and the right to freedom. Here is the UK Secretary’s email address: public.enquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk or with us at the email address wetooareprotesters@gmail.com

Here are some crucial affirmations that can help you write your email:

Nils Melzer, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, says: “In 20 years of working with war victims, violence and political persecution, I have never seen a group of democratic states unite to deliberately isolate, demonize and abuse a single individual for so long a time and with such little respect for human dignity and status of rights. Julian Assange’s collective persecution must end here and now! “

More than 100 doctors have written to the UK Interior Secretary stating: “From a medical point of view from the available evidence, we have serious concerns about Mr. Assange’s suitability for trial in February 2020. Above all, it is our opinion that Assange requires urgent medical evaluation on the part of experts in both his medical and psychological health. Whatever hospital or medical treatment indicated should be administered be administered in an adequately equipped hospital and equipped with expert personnel.  We have real concerns certified by doctors that Mr.Assange could die in prison. Therefore, the situation is urgent. There’s no time to waste.”

Nearly 1000 journalists wrote an open declaration in defense of Julian Assange: “The ongoing legal action against Assange constitutes an extremely dangerous precedent for journalists, media and freedom of the press. We journalists and journalists from all over the world, express our grave fear for the welfare of Mr Assange, for his continued detention and for accusations of draconian espionage. As journalists and organizations of journalists who believe in human rights, in freedom of information, and in the right of public information, we ask for the immediate release of Julian Assange”.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch oppose the detention and extradition of Julian Assange, highlighting serious human rights violations due to his work with WikiLeaks: violation of his right to freedom of expression; the end of his personal freedom, freedom arising from the preventive deterrence and/or prison sentence imposed on the basis of a judiciary proceeding that violates that his freedom of expression; violation of his right to life, the death penalty could be in any proceeding that he would face in the United States; to be held in conditions that violate his rights to humane treatment and the respect for his dignity and violation of his right not to be subjected to cruel, inhumane or degrading punishment”.

We invite you to protest so that he may be immediately released and to end the imperialist wars in the Middle East by sending us a photo with the inscription #WETOOARE PROTESTERS – FREE JULIAN ASSANGE : wetooareprotesters@gmail.com

We invite you and mobilize in all useful forms with  demonstrations, signed petitions, videos, and letters to our leaders, legislators, dialogues in schools, locally and globally to put pressure on his immediate release. We are counting on the fact that you, mothers and fathers, teachers and students, citizens of all the world, are ready to defend your right to know the reason for invasions in Afghanistan and in Iraq, human rights and the state of internal and international law.
