“2013 Election: Nuclear Protest Fade”; Ibaraki Fish & High Cesium Levels – Wildlife study on boars and rats

High levels of cesium found in fish off Ibaraki
Researchers have found high levels of radioactive cesium in fish caught early this month off Hitachi in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.
Prefectural officials said 1,037 becquerels of cesium were discovered per kilogram of Japanese sea bass. That’s more than 10 times the government safety limit.
They said it is the 3rd highest level found in marine products in the region. Higher levels were only previously detected in April 2011 — one month after the Fukushima nuclear accident. The contaminated fish then was sand lance.
Reconstruction from 2011 disaster way ahead
Reconstruction of disaster-hit northeastern Japan is being slowed by a lack of land and a shortage of labor, NHK has found.
The region was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami exactly 2 years and 4 months ago.
In coastal areas in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, households are relocating to higher ground. In some places, ground levels are being raised to avoid flooding by tsunami.
But work is likely to take much longer than expected, amid difficulties in buying up land and securing labour.

Japan nuclear regulator alarmed at Fukushima contamination reports
Japan’s nuclear regulator expressed growing alarm on July 10 at increased contamination beside the seafront of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant and urged the plant’s operators to take protective measures.
Fukushima’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., has acknowledged problems are mounting at the plant north of Tokyo, the site of the world’s worst atomic disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.
On July 9, the company said radiation levels in groundwater had soared, suggesting highly toxic materials from the plant were getting closer to the Pacific more than two years after three meltdowns triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami.

61,000 Bq/Kg from wild boar meat in Fukushima, the highest reading ever
Posted by Mochizuki on April 1st, 2013
According to MHLW (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare), 61,000 Bq/Kg of Cs-134/137 was measured from the wild boar meat, which was the highest reading ever.
The sample was from Minamisoma city Fukushima, Cs-134 was 21,100 Bq/Kg, Cs-137 was 40,200 Bq/Kg.
Among the 48 samples, they measured over 100 Bq/Kg from 98 % of the samples. 1,000~9,999 Bq/Kg was measured from 68.75 % of the samples. Over 10,000 Bq/Kg was measured from 6.25 % of the samples.
The samples were taken from this February to March.

According to MHLW, over 10,000 Bq/Kg of Cs-134/137 was measured from 10% of wild boar meat samples.
The highest reading was 56,000 Bq/Kg from the sample of Minamisoma city.
Over 1,000 Bq/Kg of Cs-134/137 was measured from 70% of all the samples.
Cs-134/137 was measured from 100% of the samples.
The sampling date was 1 ~ 2. 2013.

Wild boar meat factory to open in Chiba
Posted by Mochizuki on February 10th, 2013
On 12/24/2012, Fukushima Diary reported “Wild boar meat processing factory stopped for excessive contamination in Chiba”. [URL]
However the meat processing factory is to open because the shipping restriction of boar meat was lifted this January. They are going to have the opening ceremony on 2/11/2013.
They can potentially process 350 wild boars and deer annually but because these animals eat wild grown products of a mountain, their meat accumulate radioactive material.
