It makes me ashamed actually, the media coverage we have had that has added pressure to the Japanese who have had a lot of problems at the same time…”

some people in the future will actually not want the samples at all – the bioinformaticists amongst us will actually want data to look at, rather than the tissue samples themselves.”

“(but what about evidence for future litigation on behalf of the victims who were demonstrating outside the Symposium? Arclight2011)

The below thread from Enenews shows an interesting discussion about caesium studies and caesium non-studies by the Japanese involving the Imperial College University London claiming no knowledge of data garnered from the Chernobyl accident. The UK thyroid Association works CLOSELY with Imperial College.. Very close! And the UK thyroid Association works closely with the Japanese Thyroid Association who did no research into radiation effects in the first years of the Fukushima disaster, according to their website.

Heres some of that reply from Imperial College University

“Belarus was an original partner in the project, but one of the conditions of the project was that each centre would provide samples to researchers. The Institute in Belarus did not do so and this is why they are no longer a partner.

Although Belarus is not included in the Tissue Bank, the incidence of thyroid cancer in Belarus is the subject of on-going research, including studies in Belarus supported by the Japanese.”

Does anyone have references to this Japanese data.. Imperial College University London doesnt seem to have it either???????…”

Extract of reply to my questions concerning the innapropriate  comment

“..some people in the future will actually not want the samples at all..”

when in fact there will be a need for the samples themselves by the victims of the tragedy and their lawyers…

Extract of response..

“….. Thank you for your email regarding Professor Geraldine Thomas’s work with the Chernobyl Tissue Bank.

“I have consulted Professor Thomas and answers to the questions that you have raised are as follows:

1. In your email, you ask about Professor Thomas ‘hinting that she would destroy vital evidence of tissue samples.’

Professor Thomas is actually explaining that researchers will be able to access existing research data as well as the samples themselves. Professor Thomas and her colleagues in the Chernobyl Tissue Bank are not planning to destroy tissue samples. To clarify what Professor Thomas says in the relevant section of her lecture, I have transcribed her words below (the words in bold represent my emphasis)……….”

“…..Because we’re now collating data back in, we have the opportunity not only to give you tissue samples, but we also have the ability to give you some existing research data that has already been collated and some people in the future will actually not want the samples at all – the bioinformaticists amongst us will actually want data to look at, rather than the tissue samples themselves.”

Far from wishing to destroy the samples or the data, the project has been working very closely with the Japanese to provide any information that may be useful to them to help with their studies on those exposed to radiation post Fukushima………”

“…Professor Thomas says that that there is no evidence for an increase in heart disease in the general population as a result of the radiation leak at Chernobyl. She has provided the following information, which may be useful:…..”

More of the reply from Imperial College UL here with some comments

And heres a worker from the duckpins mission to Chernobyl talking about similar symptoms and illness being found at Fukushima Prefecture last year..

Radiation Causing Unusual Changes: What’s Happening to Children

The point G Thomas was trying to make in her reply to me was that Cs137 the isotope, does not cause heart problems, and she goes on to state that stable caesium does have an effect..

Also her wording of “destroy the thyroid samples because we dont really need them, we just want the statistics to work with” (my take on her general point) and in the link is her exact wording..

It took nearly 4 days in an university to “properly” phrase the reply :) lol! and Richard Wakeford and friends helped her with the statistical facts ..

I respect G Thomas for replying actually.. at least she seems to have conviction, even though misplaced imo!

I was hacked for my address book the same night I sent my questions.. that might have helped craft their reply.. it was an interesting little project.. though the police officially opened an investigation into me instead of the hacker who cracked my Vodaphone account.. Vodaphone UK still have their IP address :)??

some history here.. and some swearing.. i was just a young blogger then, sorry.. getting grey haired now :( lots of great and relevant comments here too.. its all about PR really and distorted science.

International Expert Symposium Ignores Fukushima Residents: Citizens Group
September 10, 2011

“The International Expert Symposium that will be held from 11 September includes this Professor Yamashita on its organizing committee and will bring together experts who underestimate low-dose exposure risks. The Symposium must not be allowed to provide a justification for the Japanese Government’s exposure policy and confer international authority on the “Prefectural People’s Health Management Survey.” This is a threat against not only the people of Fukushima Prefecture but the whole of humankind.

We have submitted an open letter to the Symposium and will also oppose the Symposium with a protest demonstration. Please communicate the injustice of this Symposium to the whole world.
What we, the residents of Fukushima, need most of all is to evacuate to safe areas. The evacuation of children should be carried out with the utmost urgency. The tragedy of Chernobyl must not be repeated in Fukushima.

Seiichi Nakate is Executive Director of Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation”

Chernobyl thyroid tissue bank: integrating research on radiation-induced thyroid cancer

at 1.36 approx Gerry Thomas

G A Thomas (Imperial College London, UK)

Here G Thomas is talking about the missed chance of Chernobyl and the opportunities of studying the cancer in the Fukushima Prefecture and developing oncology treatments.. her main issue is collation of data.. her tissue bank only started in 1998.. at 1.46 approx says saving data is what is important not saving tissue samples and then goes on to say that the 4000 reviewed tissue samples do not include any from Belarus, and that it is a small number anyway! No questions taken from the audience!!

Cancer models and radiation protection
Richard Wakeford (University of Manchester, UK)

He says anything below 100 mgray is no worry goes on to discuss thresholds and small risk of low dose damage. He says that figures are clear at 1+ gray but lower down admits things are “not so clear” 50 to 100 milligray data shows some damage.. He mainly talks of xray not particulate radiation concerning pregnant women..
@38.38 when asked about internal and external radiation differences he said he sat on a difficult committee for three years which he sniped about.. audience laughs!!. he said that the claims made by the radiological committee “don’t hold water” . lots of help from the audience to divert the question too!

“…“Caesium does not accumulate in any tissue, and so the dose received over a long period of time (Caesium has a half-life of 30 years, iodine a half-life of 8 days) is a low whole body dose. High doses of non-radioactive Caesium can damage the heart (several grams per day over a long period) and high doses of radioactive Caesium can be used as a cancer treatment. However, the amount of Caesium ingested by the population was small.””
“If you are interested in further information about this, you may wish to look at the following scientific papers. These show that only the liquidators who received much higher doses than the resident population show any effects on the heart and the issue of whether or not these are genuine effects of radiation is still being debated.

A review by Richard Wakeford, a UK Epidemiologist:

The above is the object as stated at the charity commision website…
and then there is this..

Chernobyl Heart

“In Belarus, only 15-20% of babies are born healthy. Roche comforts children who are born with multiple holes in their heart, a condition known in Belarus as “Chernobyl heart.” A lucky few will have their heart problems fixed by Dr. William Novick, who heads the International Children’s Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children with congenital or acquired heart disease in developing countries throughout the world.”
