Criminal complaint filed against TEPCO and the Japanese government

1,324 Fukushima People Filed A Criminal Complaint Against TEPCO and the Government (Jun/11/2012)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=xfSbZvBOwKM  Jun 13, 2012 by

On June 11, 2012, 1324 people from Fukushima Prefecture filed a criminal complaint against Tokyo Electric Power Co. Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata and 32 others, accusing them of professional negligence resulting in death and injury, arguing they were responsible for causing the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant and the exposure of the plaintiffs to radiation.

In the written complaint filed with the Fukushima District Public Prosecutors Office, the complainants said the 33 neglected to take disaster countermeasures, despite the frequency of earthquakes in Japan and indications by experts of the possibility of tsunami. They also argued that the officials failed to release evacuation information appropriately, which led to residents’ exposure to radiation.

The 33 include TEPCO Chairman Katsumata, former TEPCO President Masataka Shimizu, 13 other TEPCO officials, Nuclear Safety Commission Chief Haruki Madarame, and 3 Radiation Health Risk Management Advisors of the prefecture including Shunichi Yamashita, Vice President of Fukushima Medical University.

“By holding them accountable, we will carry out our responsibility to the next generation,” says Ms. Ruiko Muto, leader of the complainant organization. “I hope our action will lead to reuniting our bonds disrupted by the disaster.”

They plan to file the second complaint where people outside Fukushima Prefecture can join the complainant. The dedline for joining is the end of September 2012.

The nuclear fusion dream – ever elusive

Fusion: Maybe Less Than 30 Years, But This Year Unlikely Bill Chameides Dean, Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, August 2012 No ignition at the U.S. National Ignition Facility , home to the world’s largest laser….. Scientists have been thinking about how to bring this game changer into the energy game for decades. (See fusion/fission timeline .) As far back as 1946, two British scientists — Sir George Paget Thomson and Moses Blackman — filed the first patent for a fusion power plant .

But there have been a couple of hold-ups . To get a fusion reaction started, you need to slam the hydrogen atoms together really, really hard and that requires a lot of energy. (In a hydrogen bomb, the fusion reaction gets ignited by an atomic bomb, using fission. Not exactly the preferred method for your local fusion power plant.)

Even trickier is controlling the fusion reaction. It’s one thing to make a fusion bomb, it’s a lot harder to get the reaction going and keep it under control in a way that the amount of energy extracted is larger than that expended to initiate and manage the reaction.

Over the almost 70-year pursuit of the fusionary holy grail, it’s been fairly common for scientists working on the problem to say that they’re about 30 years away from achieving a power plant based on fusion. (See here  and here .) The problem has been that while time has marched on, the 30-year horizon has remained fixed. Suffice to say it has proven to be a very tough problem…. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-chameides/fusion-maybe-less-than-30_b_1949573.html

Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s sham review of San Onofre nuclear plant

Activists Say Feds Conducting Sham Nuke Review
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/nrc-damaged-calif-nuke-plant-face-long-review-17427917#.UHXEcS7A9dM    By MICHAEL R. BLOOD Associated Press LOS ANGELES October 9, 2012  Environmentalists accused federal regulators Tuesday of conducting a bogus review of a proposal to restart the damaged San Onofre nuclear power plant on the California coast.

Just days after Southern California Edison asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for permission to repair and start the Unit 2 reactor, then run it at reduced power, the agency is facing pressure from groups critical of the nuclear power industry to initiate a
review that could take months or even years to complete.

The NRC is “denying the public any meaningful voice” in the review to restart the plant, which has been shuttered since January, Friends of the Earth, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Committee to Bridge the Gap said in a joint statement. Continue reading

Title: 4,000 tons of shells explode in Central Russia, leave mushroom cloud-like plume of smoke
Source: RT
Date: Oct 9, 2012

Anxious comments about the aftermath of the explosions circulated on the Internet. Dunguz resident Valentina Aramova said the explosions were so powerful that some trees fell, the local Orenburg ‘56-media’ website reported.“At the local market the trading stalls folded up like playing cards,” she said. “Children are being evacuated from kindergartens and schools. Everyone is being asked to go far into the steppe. The whole of Dunguz is in plumes of black smoke.”

Other witnesses from the town of Donguz told RT they are being removed from the area, and claimed they saw a large number of military vehicles, ambulances, emergency workers, communication officers and repair workers heading to the site. Authorities are phoning local residents, explaining the situation and asking them to remain calm. Buses were dispatched to transport residents away from the area. […]

That statement was later disputed by the Press Service of Russia’s Defense Ministry, which claimed no one was injured or went missing in the incident. The ministry also denied that a train loaded with shells was at the testing range, saying only three shells exploded. […]

Breaking! BP Gulf disaster -Food chain damage likely on the way

Kristiansen said that the worst of the damage from the oil remains buried in such sub-sand deposits would likely be subsurface ecosystems.

“The damage that we don’t see could be far worse,” he said. “The subsurface ecosystem damage can damage the genetic make up of and productivity of these ecosystems.”

He said that the chemicals released by the initial spill accumulate upward in the food chain, and “reach levels above the threshold of what causes genetic damage in marine species, and may further cause cancer in seafood consuming humans.”

“If anyone is still accepting BPs assertions that this is not an environmental disaster any longer, this is an eye opener,” he added.

Post Hurrican Isaac oil washing up on Gulf of Mexico shores tied to BP Deepwater Horizon blowout

Charles Digges, 09/10-2012

Bellona

Most oil that appeared along Gulf of Mexico shores in the wake of August’s Hurricane Isaac has been traced to be remnants of crude that gushed from the Macondo well during BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, area marine laboratories and BP have confirmed.

Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Mississippiwere last month hit by tar balls and oilexposed by waves from the hurricane, which made landfall at the mouth of the Mississippi river on August 28.

Laboratories from across the states affected by the hurricane – and previously oil sludge from the  Deepwater Horizon explosion, the largest oil spill in US history – said to Bellona in emails that their own independent chemical analyses revealed that most of the oil found along beaches in the coastal states had come from the Macondo well.

Tests run at Louisiana State University for state wildlife officials confirmed that oil found on Elmer’s Island and Grand Isle, near Venice, Louisiana, matched the biological fingerprint of the 4.9 million barrels of oil that gushed out of the well over a 55 day period after the BP operated Deepwater Horizon rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11.

LSU chemist Ed Overton said the oil found on Elmer’s Island had not degraded much while oil at Grand Isle had.

“Both were good solid matches on Macondo oil,” Overton said.

Joel Hayworth, a researcher with Auburn University in Alabama confirmed that that tar balls collected in his state after Isaac were also associated with the type of oil spilled during the Deepwater Horizon accident.

“The discovery of oil spills on beaches in Louisiana confirms the severity of the Deepwater Horizon accident. This shows that the severity of the spill is much more complex than what we know today,” said Bellona President Frederic Hauge, who was in Louisiana in 2010 with other Bellona staff to follow the BP accident.
