Australia jumps to obey USA, on India, uranium, and militarism
Gillard is helping to destabilise the sub-continent by fuelling a dangerous arms race involving India’s rivals, China and Pakistan.
The Labor government’s about face on uranium sales to India under Gillard was carried out on Washington’s orders. In November 2011, the US ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, publicly called on Canberra to “sort out” its issues with India, as the US had done when it resolved the “thorny point” of uranium sales through the 2008 nuclear deal that exempted India from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
Australian PM visit to India bolsters new “strategic partnership” WSWS, By Patrick O’Connor 20 October2012 Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s three-day trip to India this week was aimed at deepening military, diplomatic, and economic ties between the two countries.
Washington has encouraged the closer relations as part of its aggressive drive to undermine the influence of China in the Indo-Pacific region. Gillard met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. High on the agenda was progress towards Australian uranium sales to India, Continue reading

Costly to set up, but Germans think that clean energy is worth the price
Poll finds large majority of Germans favor phasing out nuclear power despite rising costs News Ser 22 Oct 12 Poll: Germans accept nuke exit despite rising bill ASSOCIATED PRESS |22 Oct 12 A new poll finds that a large majority of Germans back the government’s decision to phase out nuclear power and switch to renewable energies within a decade, despite rising electricity bills.
The poll for German news magazine Focus published Sunday found that 72 percent continue to support the country’s energy switchover. Only 24 percent were opposed to the policy.
Germany’s grid operators announced earlier this month that a surcharge on households’ electricity prices financing the expansion of renewable energies will increase by 47 percent starting in January. A typical family of four will then have to pay about (EURO)250 ($325) per year on top of their bill… http://www.newser.com/article/da21vv5g1/poll-finds-large-majority-of-germans-favor-phasing-out-nuclear-power-despite-rising-costs.html
Denmark is way ahead of its solar energy goal
Denmark Hits 200 Megawatt Solar Capacity Goal 8 Years Ahead of Schedule by Molly Cotter, 10/15/12http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1jrNeg/inhabitat.com/denmark-hits-200-megawatt-solar-capacity-goal-8-years-ahead-of-schedule/ Lets face it – its rare we see a government goal reached on time, let alone early. Not too long ago, the Danish Government announced an ambitious goal to reach 200 megawatts of solar capacity by 2020, and as of last week, they have already met it! The country is currently installing an average of 36 megawatts of solar panels each month. At this rate, their resulting capacity by 2020 will be over five times the original goal. Denmark‘s power is currently 20% supplied by renewable sources, and the nation has set a goal of sourcing 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050.
Nuclear reactors near dams – damn dangerous
Occupy the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission)The NRC’s job is to PROTECT citizens from the dangers of nuclear power. SO WE HAVE JUST ONE QUESTION: Since when is purposefully concealing information about the potential failings of the nuclear power plants near us part of protecting us???? In a letter submitted Friday with the NRC Office of Inspector General, Richard Perkins, an NRC reliability and risk engineer, said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission “intentionally mischaracterized relevant and noteworthy safety information as sensitive, security information in an effort to conceal the information from the public.” An engineer with the NRC says that a reactor meltdown is an “absolute certainty” if a dam upstream of a nuclear plant fails

Masaki KITO, an attorney in Tokyo, is suing Tepco for ongoing damages caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster: Let me be clear: Once an accident occurs EVERYTHING is over! Those who make a living from fishing will have zero prospects of ever restoring their fishing grounds after a single accident. […]
Accidents are more likely from mistakes in the siting of a nuclear plant. […]
Diablo Canyon [California, US] also needs a thorough study of its faults. The current assumption of seismic force seems to be grossly underestimatedbased on what we experienced in Japan. We’ve already experienced a M9.0 quake here. Similar sized faults anywhere in the world could produce another M9.0 quake. […]
Please understand once that happens, all will be lost. This is the reality of nuclear energy today.
Warning to Taiwan on its special danger from nuclear power
Taiwan has one of the highest densities of nuclear power plants in the world
the population density in northern Taiwan is so high that it would be very difficult to evacuate people if a nuclear accident were to occur at the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant in Gongliao District (貢寮), New Taipei City (新北市).
“The evacuation efficiency in northern Taiwan is virtually zero,”
Scientist warns of dangers of Taiwan nuclear mishap Taipei Times 21 Oct 12, By Lee I-chia A Japanese nuclear scientist and researcher says that if a nuclear accident occurred at one of northern Taiwan’s nuclear power plants, about 30,000 people would die within a short period of time and up to 7 million people could develop cancer from exposure to the nuclear radiation. Need for diplomacy with Iran, on the nuclear issue
no one gets respect like those who have the bomb. And those who stop reaching for it tend to get killed.
Israel Has Nuclear Weapons, But Only Iran Has Nuclear Power Forbes.com James Conca, 21 Oct 12, With all the uproar over Iran’s nuclear weapons program, reckless speculation on attacks and the latest Iranian cyberthreat, does anyone care that Iran just brought up to full power the only commercial nuclear energy reactor in the Middle East? Of the kind you can’t really make weapons from?
It’s easy to forget that Iran has had a 50-year nuclear program, begun by the United States in the 1960’s Continue reading
French research confirms childhood leukaemia rates up, near nuclear power plants
Fukushima’s Hot Water: Now Fallout in Our Kitchens? On The Issue, by Kimberly Roberson, 21 Oct 12, “……Just this year, French researchers confirmed that childhood leukemia rates are greatly elevated among children living near nuclear power plants. The January 2012 International Journal of Cancer published the study,Childhood Leukemia Around French Nuclear Power Plants — the Geocap Study 2002-2007.
The inherent function of nuclear reactors requires routine invisible releases of cancer-causing radionuclides via the towers. Researchers also continue to see increases in cancer clusters — especially of thyroid cancer, breast cancer and leukemia — in areas near nuclear power plants.
In addition, how to handle the waste from nuclear power plants is still unsolved. The question is: how to safely store the millions of pounds of so-called “spent fuel” created by nuclear power production. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was recently forced to halt licenses for new nuclear plants until a solution can be found to store deadly radioactive waste that will remain hazardous for millennia at best. http://www.ontheissuesmagazine.com/2012fall/2012fall_Roberson.php
Cesium above new limit in Miyagi beef http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20121019a2.html Jiji SENDAI — Radioactive cesium levels above the government’s new limit have been found in beef from Miyagi Prefecture, the prefectural government said.
Meat from a cow shipped by a farmer in Tome was found to contain more than 150 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram, the Miyagi Prefectural Government said Wednesday.
The stricter limit of 150 becquerels for beef and rice took effect Oct. 1. The previous limit was 500 becquerels per kilogram.
It is the first time beef with radioactive cesium levels above the tightened limit has been found.
The cow was shipped to a slaughterhouse in the Shibaura district in Tokyo and a radioactivity check on the meat was conducted Tuesday, the prefecture said. The meat was discarded, officials said.
The prefecture is investigating, suspecting that rice straw eaten by the cow was contaminated by fallout from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant disaster.Miyagi Prefecture told the farmer not to ship any more cows until the investigation is completed, and asked nearby ranchers to suspend shipments voluntarily.

Mr. Yastel Yamada, a retired engineer and founder of the Fukushima Skilled Veterans Corps: Now we need the storage of the excess water. It increases day by day. You can see some tank here, storage tank of the excess water.
Tanks are not sufficient at this moment. Tepco has dug a pit and lined with bentonite and polyethylene seal, and stored water underground, and then cover.
But if there were any earthquake again here, a crack would generate, I guess. And I don’t know why Tepco has decided to make underground [inaudible] for excess water. It can easily be discharged into the underground water.
Land of Hope – love, loss and nuclear power in Japan, Montreal Gazette October 21, 2012 Land of Hope is nothing like Sion Sono’s exuberant Love
Exposure (shown in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival).
It’s a sad, sober, quiet film that provides food for thought. I’m assuming that the titles is a bit of a sad joke because there isn’t too much hope here, actually. What hope that there is would probably die if exposed to the light of truth.
The movie imagines an additional nuclear power disaster, in Nagashima, Japan, after the one that really did happen in Fukishima, as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in 2011…..
