Energy minister believes feds might pay for power, dailygleaner.com, By SHAWN BERRY, 14 Jan 2010, New Brunswick’s Energy minister still believes the province can get Ottawa to pay for ongoing delays at the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant.That comes after New Brunswick’s senior cabinet minister recently said the federal government won’t pay the $1 million-a-day cost of buying replacement power…….
The reactor is expected to be back online in the fall of that year – three years overdue and about $1 billion over budget………….
The refurbishment of Atlantic Canada’s only nuclear facility was originally budgeted at $1.4 billion, including roughly $400 million to cover the cost of replacement power, when it was taken offline in March 2008.
The cost of refurbishing the reactor will be born by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., but NB Power is paying almost $1 million a day to continue to provide replacement power.
