Uranium mining threatens water supply for millions of people

Keep ban on Canyon uranium mines, THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC, – Robert L. Arnberger, Aug. 24, 2010 Most of us are familiar with President Theodore Roosevelt’s oft-quoted statement upon visiting the Grand Canyon: “Leave it as it is . . . man can only mar it.”That statement rings especially true when you read the new report from National Parks Conservation Association, which documents the risk of uranium mining to the Grand Canyon and Colorado River – the water supply for millions…….
For years, the Park Service has warned hikers and rafters about the risk of polluted water on the South Rim, where Horn Creek flows into the Colorado River. The Orphan uranium mine operated here until 1969; it is now a Superfund site, fenced off to visitors, awaiting some sort of remediation for the damage it left behind.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar rightly called a “time-out” on new uranium mining near the Grand Canyon to allow more study. We need to take steps to pursue more permanent protection for our national treasure, our water supply and our legacy to the next generation. Keep ban on Canyon uranium mines
