Burma has ambitious, but inexpert, nuclear programme

“information has replaced rumour with hard data” and concluded that Myanmar’s nuclear programme is “overly ambitious with limited expertise”.

Myanmar’s nuke site found?, TODAY,  Jul 23, 2010 HANOI – Fresh evidence has surfaced to support allegations that the Myanmar government is pursuing a nuclear weapons programme – a charge that Myanmar denies.

Jane’s Intelligence Review, a monthly journal on military intelligence, released a report on Wednesday saying it has identified and analysed sites related to the programme using satellite imagery.
The evidence, it said, corroborate allegations by Myanmar defector Major Sai Thein Win, who says he worked as a machine shop supervisor at two special factories supplying prototype equipment to the nuclear and missile programmes.

US-funded Myanmar opposition news website, Democratic Voice of Burma, based in Norway, had gathered testimony from Mr Sai as well as documents and colour photographs of the installations. Jane’s said the “information has replaced rumour with hard data” and concluded that Myanmar’s nuclear programme is “overly ambitious with limited expertise”.

“They will not make a bomb with the technology they currently possess or the intellectual capability,” Jane’s analyst Allison Puccioni said in an interview.

But she added that “the two factors do make it possible to have a route to one”.
