Factual info about the myth of Thorium being useful!

UPDATE (2012/05/02): Added IEER’s Some Characteristics of Uranium and Thorium
UPDATE (2012/04/29): Added the UK NNL report! Thanks DARyan!

There is a rash of misinformation on the net about the supposed merits of the ‘new’ nuclear energy source on the block, thorium. I am sure that in a perfect world where nobody lies, thorium would be the perfect answer to the world’s energy needs as is claimed. This is unfortunately not the case.

Apparently, every time there is a new nuclear catastrophe, the thorium ‘miracle’ is promoted again as the ‘savior’ for the world. The Fukushima nuclear radiation catastrophe was not unique and the thorium misinformation artists have come out in droves. It’s the nuclear industry’s defense mechanism – create a new ‘safety myth’ that regular people can latch onto.

In reality, the thorium nuclear fuel cycle has been under development since the very early days of the nuclear industry…

  2. I’d like to add that what we are seeing is that Big Nuclear has the ability to donate huge amounts of money to Congress and both political parties in order to get R&D funding for themselves…

This ability to spend money to make even more money does not make the technology “RIGHT” or the best choice for America’s future, especially when the end users have little to no say in the process.

We all have seen how the Japanese people are powerless to stop their Utility Gangs from restarting their nuclear power plants; sadly much of the same thing is happening in the USA, especially in the Red States where Big Nuclear is KING…

The one thing that may prevent this redirection of R&D money is that now even Wall Street is reluctant to loan money because they do not want to accept the risk any longer and here is why:

    Solar (of all flavors):

    … Is faster to install,

    … Costs less to install

… Is ready for 24/7 power

… Requires no HUGE decommissioning costs

… And has no Nuclear RISK…

BTW: Thorium is yet another Black Hole that has taken billions of dollars in R & D and is nowhere near ready for prime time, unlike Solar (of all flavors)…

      • I’m not sure just what be on the STAFF really entails! I’ll be happy to click the Reblog button every time I post a comment, if that is all there is to it I’m glad to be onboard, If I’m off-base then I’m sure Christina MacPherson will let me know. ;^)

      • I too, puzzle over that phrase. There is no “staff”. There’s me, and there’s Sean McGee (arclight 2011), from the UK. We contribute the posts. And this is mainly an aggregate news site. But we welcome original writings. The website is provided free, by WordPress, who would gather any money from any advertising that they choose to put on this site.
