Myself a breast cancer survivor, I have watched over the years as the incidence of breast cancer continues to increase with nobody asking the right questions. One out of 13 women got breast cancer when I was first diagnosed in 1984. Today the incidence is one woman out of eight. What is that about?

Medical radiation – useful, but also dangerous

The effects of ionizing radiation are cumulative, so all of those dental x-rays, chest x-rays, and CT scans add up

Radiation’s Double-Edged Sword ,Kerri Wachter, 1 March 2010, Ionizing radiation—useful for imaging and therapy—has undoubtedly been a boon to medicine. The ability to quickly and noninvasively peek inside the body has not only led to faster diagnoses, but more accurate ones. The ability to target cancerous tissue with a beam of radiation has improved therapeutic options for many cancer patients. However, it comes with a cost. Continue reading

U.S. States starting to rebel against nuclear industry

The nuclear industry may think it’s on the verge of a revival, but the people of the United States are saying something very different! Beyond Nuclear 27 Feb 2010

In Vermont on Tuesday, the State Senate voted 26-4 to close the Vermont Yankee reactor when its license expires in 2012. That’s a huge victory, but one that will need to be protected over the coming months since no one is foolish enough to believe the Entergy Corporation is just going to slink home. Here is a statement from Citizens Awareness Network on the vote.

Yesterday in West Virginia, a bill to repeal that state’s ban on new nuclear construction was defeated in the state legislature. Although the bill had already passed the Senate’s Energy and Mining Committee, it received only one vote in the Judiciary Committee and is now dead for the year.

And yesterday in Arizona, a bill to classify nuclear power as renewable energy was withdrawn following heavy lobbying from the solar power industry and environmental community.

AREVA’s deceptive nuclear spin

AREVA tells only half the story, NUCLEAR REACTION, 24 Feb 2010, “….it’s business as usual at AREVA’s mines in Niger despite the military coup that took place in the country last week. The industry also needs to show us all that it can deal with the highly radiaoctive waste that nuclear reactors produce in a safe, clean fashion.
