Why Can’t They Relocate? Fukushima’s Dilemma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTmT8JOlG40&feature=player_detailpage#t=1080s BACKGROUND: A year and a half after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, there are still many families with children who live in highly contaminated areas for various reasons even if they are concerned about the health effects from radiation exposure. Many citizens are struggling financially and unable to relocate to outside of Fukushima without a proper assistance from the government. Fukushima families’ unique ties with neighbors, relatives and friends in their communities sometimes prevent them to evacuate from contaminated areas. Some families with members who have a disability or chronic illness do not have capacity to relocate to a new community. In order to assist those families from highly contaminated areas in Fukushima, many Japanese nonprofit organizations and grassroots organizations established “hoyo projects” or recreation projects to provide them with temporary group homes, so that their children could enjoy short-term recreation opportunities in less contaminated areas while reducing their accumulated dosage of radiation. However, these projects are now facing challenges.

Gundersen explains how spent fuel pools are not configured to be cooled with diesel power in the event of a loss of offsite power. Oyster Creek and several other nuclear power plants did lose offsite power and Thomson Reuters reports that they may use fire pumps to cool the pools.

“Nuclear Savage” shows recently declassified films about Marshall Islands bombing

John Dear will speak  Nov. 9 at the Call to Action conference in Louisville, Ky. To see John’s 2012 speaking schedule, go to John Dear’s website . His new book, Lazarus, Come Forth! , explores Jesus as the God of life calling humanity (in the symbol of the dead Lazarus) out of the tombs of the culture of war and death. John’s talk at last year’s Sabeel conference in Bethlehem is featured in the new book Challenging Empire . John is profiled with Dan Berrigan and Roy Bourgeois in a new book, Divine Rebels  by Deena Guzder (Lawrence Hill Books). This book and other recent books, including Daniel Berrigan: Essential Writings ; Put Down Your Sword  and A Persistent Peace , are available from Amazon.com.

Nuclear Savage’: A powerful new documentary on U.S. hydrogen bombs, National Catholic Reporter,  John Dear S.J.  |  Oct. 30, 2012 Recently, I saw a powerful, disturbing new documentary about the U.S. hydrogen bomb explosions in the islands in the South Pacific, the U.S. government’s campaign to keep the indigenous people on those contaminated islands and the U.S. government’s secret program to monitor the effects of radiation on them.

Nuclear Savage: The Islands of Secret Project 4.1 ,” a film by former Greenpeace activist Adam Horowitz, uses recently declassified government film footage of the hydrogen bombs we dropped in the South Pacific and recent interviews with survivors to tell this nightmarish nuclear tale. In old black-and-white footage, we see excited white, U.S. military men speaking somberly into the camera about the glories of the hydrogen bomb and describing how well “the savages,” his term for the people of the Marshall Islands, were responding to our nuclear bomb explosions. The combination of militarism, U.S. imperialism, nuclear weapons, environmental destruction, sheer racism and total disregard for these gentle, impoverished people is shocking, to say the least.

Of course, the real savages are the Americans who built and dropped these bombs and who maintain our nuclear weapons industry today. Continue reading

Spent nuclear fuel likely to heat up at New Jersey nuclear plants

AUDIO: Gundersen: I suspect we’re going to see reports of spent fuel pools heating up at New Jersey nuclear plants — The problem is reactors were in refueling mode
http://enenews.com/gundersen-suspect-going-reports-spent-fuel-pools-heating-new-jersey-nuclear-plants-video
October 30th, 2012
Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Associates: The problem is that Salem and the Oyster Creek plant, which we just talked about, were in a refueling mode. And what that means is that all of the nuclear fuel is not in the nuclear reactor, it’s in the spent fuel
pool. And when you lose off-site power, you can’t cool the fuel pool. I suspect in the next couple days we’re going to see reports of the fuel pools heating up because they were unable to cool the spent fuel pool.

Special Edition Podcast: After Hurricane Sandy – Questions and Answers
About What Happened, Oct. 30, 2012

Host: […] What if the reactor were running in that type of situation?

Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education: That
would be worse case scenario.

If Oyster Creek wasn’t in a refueling and this tidal surge hit, it’s
exactly what happened at Fukushima Daiichi at that point.

You’ve lost off-site power and you can’t cool the nuclear reactor
because these pumps were flooded.

We can all be thankful that the plant was in a refueling outage.

AUDIO: Hazards of power loss, in nuclear reactors’ shutdown

Gundersen: 26 nuclear plants in area where Hurricane Sandy likely to hit — If power lost, only plan is to let spent fuel pools heat up… no generators to pump in water (AUDIO)  http://enenews.com/gundersen-26-nuclear-plants-area-hurricane-sandy-hit-power-lost-only-plan-spent-fuel-pools-heat-diesel-generators-pump-water-audio October 28th, 2012

Transcript Summary of an excerpt from the October 28, 2012 podcast by Fairewinds Energy Education:

You’ll hear in the next 2 days, “We’ve safely shutdown the plant”
What Fukushima taught us is that doesn’t stop the decay heat
You need the diesels to keep the reactors cool
26 plants in the East Coast are in the area where Sandy is likely to hit
Fuel pools not cooled by diesels, no one wanted to buy them
If recent refuel, hot fuel will throw off more and more moisture from pool
Reactor buildings not meant to handle the high humidity
Fuel pool liner not really designed to approach boiling water, may unzip if water gets too hot
A lot of problems with allowing fuel pool to over
Need water in around 2 days if hot fuel in pool
The only fall-back if power is lost is to let fuel pools heat up

David Freeman, a senior advisor with Friends of the Earth’s nuclear campaign […] was appointed chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, where he stopped the construction of eight large nuclear power plants and pioneered a massive energy conservation program. Subsequently, Freeman served for two decades as general manager of several large public power agencies including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the New York Power Authority and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. He is a renowned expert on clean energy, efficiency and the risks of nuclear power.

At 27:30 in

David Freeman, former chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority: And now guess what? The Nuclear Regulatory Commission last Thursday, guess what they met on? You won’t believe this… The subject of the meeting was 80-year licenses for old nuclear power plants […]  If you have a plant operating for 80 years [next to an earthquake fault] you’re not just rolling the dice, you’re practically committing suicide […] everyone living within a 50 mile radius is a guinea pig.

Watch the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmdILRvIdck Title: Masaki KITO, Attorney in Tokyo, on Fukushima and fishing  Oct 19, 2012

Masaki KITO, an attorney in Tokyo, is suing Tepco for ongoing damages caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster: Let me be clear: Once an accident occurs EVERYTHING is over! Those who make a living from fishing will have zero prospects of ever restoring their fishing grounds after a single accident. […]

Accidents are more likely from mistakes in the siting of a nuclear plant. […]

Diablo Canyon [California, US] also needs a thorough study of its faults. The current assumption of seismic force seems to be grossly underestimatedbased on what we experienced in Japan. We’ve already experienced a M9.0 quake here. Similar sized faults anywhere in the world could produce another M9.0 quake. […]

Please understand once that happens, all will be lost. This is the reality of nuclear energy today.

Mr. Yastel Yamada, a retired engineer and founder of the Fukushima Skilled Veterans Corps: Now we need the storage of the excess water. It increases day by day. You can see some tank here, storage tank of the excess water.

Tanks are not sufficient at this moment. Tepco has dug a pit and lined with bentonite and polyethylene seal, and stored water underground, and then cover.

But if there were any earthquake again here, a crack would generate, I guess. And I don’t know why Tepco has decided to make underground [inaudible] for excess water. It can easily be discharged into the underground water.

Land of Hope – love, loss and nuclear power in Japan, Montreal Gazette October 21, 2012 Land of Hope is nothing like Sion Sono’s exuberant Love
Exposure (shown in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival).

It’s a sad, sober, quiet film that provides food for thought. I’m assuming that the titles is a bit of a sad joke because there isn’t too much hope here, actually. What hope that there is would probably die if exposed to the light of truth.

The movie imagines an additional nuclear power disaster, in Nagashima, Japan, after the one that really did happen in Fukishima, as a result of the earthquake and tsunami in 2011…..

AUDIO: new insights into why the nuclear industry is failing

Nuclear Energy Raises More Questions  http://blogs.abc.net.au/nsw/2012/10/nuclear-energy-raises-more-questions.html  ABC Radio 702 Sydney. Tim Holt interviews Derek Abbott,  Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Adelaide, raises some very interesting practical considerations that will affect the future of this alternative source.  17/10/2012

TRANSCRIPT  – (best I could manage – Christina Macpherson)

PROF ABBOTT  – Very hard to say how much nuclear industry is going ahead. Nuclear power –  Some countries going ahead some countries pulling back. Not all so rosy in India. They are planning 60 nuclear stations. But In Tamil district 10,000 villagers demonstrating against local nuclear reactor, going on hunger strikes. Indian forces had to put out 4,000 security forces to control this problem. Needed large security force there.

Can nuclear power supply world’s needs? Could it ever be a reality?
My view is no. Nuclear power at the most could achieve only a very small slice of global energy pie. Can’t even supply half of the world’s needs. Continue reading
