Jon Stewart demolishes US Republicans’ opposition to Iran nuclear deal

Jon Stewart Skewers GOP Over Iran Nuclear Deal Complaints (includes video)

“Basically, you’re treating this critical international accord like some kind of bizarro iTunes user agreement.”

News Editor, The Huffington Post 23 July 15 “……..The Obama administration sent the nuclear agreement to Congress on Sunday, and as Stewart noted, many Republicans expressed their extreme unhappiness with it. Some, like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) even called it a “historically bad” deal.

But is it as awful as they claim?

Stewart skewered Graham and others for baselessly criticizing the agreement, and for not offering any viable alternatives despite their grousing.

“You didn’t even read the deal?” Stewart said of Graham, who admitted to not having read the agreement. “Basically, you’re treating this critical international accord like some kind of bizarro iTunes user agreement. Blah, blah, blah, blah, just skip all the details.”

Watch the video above to see if Stewart was really able to keep mum about Trump throughout the whole segment. The comedian also offers details of an alternative deal with Iran. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/jon-stewart-gop-iran-nuclear-deal_55b0a51fe4b08f57d5d3b1d5

Concerns that Saudi Arabia would go for nuclear weapons, if Iran did

Saudi Arabia’s contest for power with Iran could turn nuclear, Business Insider ANGUS MCDOWALL,
Jul. 21, 2015, RIYADH (Reuters) – One likely Saudi Arabian response to the deal its biggest enemy Iran has struck with world powers is to accelerate its own nuclear power plans, creating an atomic infrastructure it could, one day, seek to weaponize.

But while it has recently made moves to advance its nuclear program, experts say it is uncertain whether it could realistically build an atomic bomb in secret or withstand the political pressure it would face if such plans were revealed.

“I think Saudi Arabia would seriously try to get the bomb if Iran did. It’s just like India and Pakistan. The Pakistanis said for years they didn’t want one, but when India got it, so did they,…….http://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabias-contest-for-power-with-iran-could-turn-nuclear-2015-7?IR=T

Not realistic to mine uranium in Quebec

Quebec uranium mining not realistic for several years – BAPE,   20TH JULY 2015 BY: HENRY LAZENBY CREAMER MEDIA DEPUTY EDITOR Toronto (miningweekly.com) – Uranium mining in Quebec is not feasible for several years still, owing to the exceedingly negative perception mining of the radio active element has among the province’s inhabitants, as a result of “numerous unanswered” questions regarding human health and ecosystem integrity, a committee tasked with holding public consultations on the subject has found. The public hearings office Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) committee reported that owing to scientific uncertainty and gaps in technological knowledge, uranium mining in the province was far from reaching social and political consensus. http://www.miningweekly.com/article/quebec-uranium-mining-not-realistic-for-several-years-bape-2015-07-20

Nuclear lobby anxious about its image – trying to “engender optimism” about the industry

Nuclear magicianNuclear Communicatiion, by Suzanne Waldmann, The Energy Collective, 2 March 2015,”……. what, outside of simply providing information, can the industry do to shift people’s thoughts and feelings about nuclear?
A number of communicative tacks were floated at the CNA conference. One was better dialogue with communities, given the reasonable need communities have tofeel control over their destinies……Another option is to accelerate technological improvements. Famed climate scientist and nuclear supporter James Hansen told me that to accept nuclear power more broadly “the public needs to see things becoming safer.” ……..
there was a sense at the conference that the nuclear industry should be developing communication strategies to nudge a cultural shift amongst the public along at least one of two lines.

The first line is towards greater public pragmatism……….. the public health benefits of nuclear power ought to be foregrounded was an idea that percolated throughout the conference. ..

The second line is towards greater public optimism. Leslie Dewan testified that the spirit of the “Atoms for Peace” era—the exciting early days of atomic energy—is currently being rekindled among young nuclear engineers. How to rekindle that excitement about human ingenuity and transformative technology broadly across society is the most difficult question for nuclear communication. …..
How to engender a shift from a societal focus on risk to one on resilience and courage is perhaps the ultimate question for nuclear communication. http://www.theenergycollective.com/swaldmansympaticoca/2199926/nuclear-communication

Simply Info’s concise roundup of nuclear news for July

SimplyInfo.org; Fukushima News Roundup, July 12, 2015

NRA has begun work to consider BWR (boiling water reactors) for potential restarts. The initial push for restarts has focused on newer PWR units. All of the reactors involved in the Fukushima disaster at TEPCO’s two plants there were BWR units. The disaster proved a long list of design flaws and operational shortcomings that contributed to the disaster. This initial inspection process on BWR units is limited as seismic safety issues have yet to be addressed. This move will likely create considerable criticism since many of the root causes and damage outcomes from the Fukushima disaster are still not fully known.

In the same week NRA began considering BWR reactors for restarts, Japan’s nuclear power companiesasked that 40 year life limits for reactors be reconsidered. They want the rule changed to allow longer running. The current requirement is to have a major inspection for aging issues after 40 years in order to obtain permission to operate past that date. This request would be a major roll back of safety rules and would go against what is the norm in other countries.

Japan’s power companies are set to spend over $19 billion USD to try to deal with safety deficits at their plants. These numbers did not include some anti-terrorism efforts and is 1.5 times the previous estimate……….http://www.fukuleaks.org/web/?p=14865

France says they’ll fix their nuclear problem: it’s just that nobody believes them

plants-downFrance Will Fix Its Nuclear Problems. But Will That Satisfy Other Nations? , Forbes, July 11 15 “…….“AREVA and EDF have informed the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) that a new series of tests is underway as of April 2015 for the qualification of the … EPR reactor vessel head and bottom,” says a joint statement by EDF and Areva, which are involved in the projects. Areva designs the reactors and Electricite de France runs the nuclear operations.
“This series of tests follow chemical and mechanical tests performed on a representative model of the reactor vessel head and bottom,” the statement adds. “Following the initial tests, the results … showed that one of the criteria was not met in an area with greater than average carbon content.”

That “Flamanville” project has already been pushed back five years to 2017. However, this latest obstacle could delay it once again. With that, the French Socialist government there may well decide to pump national treasure into those French operations — to help soothe over the loss of $5.6 billion for Areva in 2014. The French government owns about 85 percent of both Areva and EDF.

Meantime, a different French project in Finland is suffering delays and cost over-runs. That Finnish facility was to be completed in 2009, and is now projected to be 2018. Cost, meanwhile have escalated …..

“….the European Pressurized Reactor and the export business in Europe may become a victim of cost extremes and schedule overreach.”…..

Critics say that the billions it will cost to make such upgrades is money that could otherwise be spent developing the country’s green energy program…..

British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association and ICAN/Amnesty campaign for veterans

Moulton man speaking out against nuclear testing 2 July 2015 http://www.spaldingtoday.co.uk/news/community/features/moulton-man-speaking-out-against-nuclear-testing-1-6842581
Doug Hern can speak of the devastation of nuclear weapons – and he does so on a regular basis in his position with the British Nuclear Test Veterans’ Association.
His latest presentation was last week, when he was a speaker at an ICAN/Amnesty International campaigners’ meeting attended by delegates from all over the world.

Doug is also liaising with a producer from BBC2 who is proposing to work on a documentary recording the Maralinga detonations in Australia.
He says: “Thirty seconds after detonation the blast is 20 miles across. It is travelling at the speed of sound.

“I am one of the few out of the 22,500 that have managed to live a productive and reasonably healthy life, but I do feel now the legacy of the tests at Christmas Island is catching up with me.”

Nuclear industry confident about Hinkley’s future – REALLY ??

exclamation-flag-UKNuclear industry confident over long-term prospects, Ft.com 12 June 15“……….a petition against it has attracted almost 8,000 signatures.

There were also objections to the overhead power lines that would be needed to carry the electricity in an area famed for its peaks and lakes……..

The first nuclear power station in the UK, Calder Hall, was built nearby. But the legacy has also left the multibillion-pound problem of how to clean up Sellafield, one of the world’s biggest nuclear waste dumps.

The government wants to build a permanent underground storage facility but in 2013 Cumbria county council voted against hosting it. The process to find a site has restarted.

Mr Samson said a long-term storage solution would improve public perception of the nuclear industry. “We encourage the government and local community to find a solution.”

The waste for the 60-year life of the Moorside plant would fill two Olympic-sized swimming pools, he said. “The UK government is committed to nuclear power and it is important for them,” he said. “It is a clean and low-carbon source.”

The $2bn nuclear power plant that never split an atom: Eerie images of Satsop Nuclear Power Plant nestled deep in Washington

  • The deserted building in Washington was one of the largest nuclear power plant constructions in U.S. history
  • But the 481-foot cooling towers on the site were never used, after the billion dollar development was scrapped
  • Satsop Nuclear Power Plant was funded by the Washington Public Power Supply System
  • It defaulted on $2.25 billion of municipal bonds that were sold to finance the project
  • Developers turned the area into a business park for companies instead of demolishing the structure

By BELINDA ROBINSON FOR DAILYMAIL.COM , 13 July 2015

Eerie images show the empty shell of an abandoned nuclear power plant that was never used.

The deserted building in Elma, Washington, was part of the largest nuclear power plant construction project in U.S. history.

But the 481-foot cooling towers on the site were never used, after the multi-billion dollar development was scrapped in 1983.

Japan’s unimaginable crisis of 17,000 Tons of Nuclear Waste

text-wise-owlJapan’s 17,000 Tons of Nuclear Waste in Search of a Home, Bloomberg by  July 10, 2015 —Welcome to Japan, land of cherry blossoms, sushi and sake, and 17,000 metric tons of highly radioactive waste.

That’s what the country has in temporary storage from its nuclear plants. Supporters of atomic power say it’s cleaner than fossil fuels for generating electricity. Detractors say there’s nothing clean about what’s left behind, some of which remains a deadly environmental toxin for thousands of years.

Since atomic power was first harnessed more than 70 years ago, the industry has been trying to solve the problem of safe disposal of the waste. Japan has been thrown into the center of the conundrum by its decision in recent months to retire five reactors after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. It also decided this week to begin the restart process of one reactor despite public opposition.

“It’s part of the price of nuclear energy,” Allison Macfarlane, a former chief of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said in an interview in Tokyo on atomic waste. “Now, especially with the decommissioning of sites, there will be more pressure to do something with this material. Because you have to.”……..

the world’s 437 operating reactors now produce about 12,000 tons of high-level waste a year, or the equivalent of 100 double-decker buses, according to theWorld Nuclear AssociationContinue reading

Talks to resume between Iran and the West, as deadline passes

diplomacy-not-bombsflag-IranIran nuclear talks to resume Saturday as deadline slips by PAUL KORING WASHINGTON — The Globe and Mail, Jul. 10, 2015 A deal to deny Iran an arsenal of nuclear warheads remained unfinished as the world’s big powers and Tehran failed again to meet a self-imposed deadline, only to set a new one for Monday.

Talks will resume Saturday in Vienna, but stark differences on key issues – intrusive inspections of Iran’s military bases, whether ending sanctions also means lifting the arms embargo – may still derail a deal.

After weeks of intense diplomacy failed to meet a twice-extended deadline, both sides resorted to veiled threats and traded accusations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the United States and its Western allies of demanding additional, last-minute requirements. “Now they have excessive demands,” he said.

President Barack Obama still hopes to announce what would be an historic breakthrough and provide a significant foreign-policy achievement to his legacy…..http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/iran-says-other-sides-changing-demands-are-bogging-down-nuclear-talks/article25409774/

Oil companies, weapons makers, committed to stopping nuclear deal with Iran

weapons1‘Greed of Wall Street prevents Iran nuclear deal from being signed’ Rt.com  July 10, 2015 Even though Americans and Iranians want peace and cooperation between their two countries, US oil cartels, defense companies and the Israel lobby is preventing a deal going forward, says Caleb Maupin from the International Action Centre.

RT: The Iran nuclear talks seem to be in deadlock. There’s still no deal in sight in Vienna, one more deadline has expired and apparently the framework pact for the talks has now been extended until Monday. Do you think we are going to see any kind of deal eventually?

Caleb Maupin: There is absolutely no rational reason that a deal wouldn’t go through. The people of the US, they want peace and further cooperation with Iran. The people of Iran want further cooperation with the US. The only thing that is getting in the way of a deal being signed and better cooperation between our two countries is the greed of Wall Street. The oil companies, the weapons manufacturers, the Israeli government and its network of supporters are really committed to preventing any deal from going forward. And even though all humanity wants peace we are really seeing every effort being made to prevent a deal from being signed and it’s very frightening to see these continued extensions of these negotiations……….

We are seeing the US at the last moment making ridiculous demands as a kind of concession to the very wealthy and powerful forces in the US that don’t want a deal to go through and it’s very unfortunate………

I think that there has been a section of the ruling elite here in the US who has said from the beginning they will not allow there to be peace between the US and Iran. And it’s not just Republicans, there are many figures within the Democratic Party that are connected to the oil companies and the weapons manufacturers and the Israel lobby. These organizations, which represent very rich and powerful people, they have control of a lot of elected officials in the US…………..http://rt.com/op-edge/272848-iran-us-nuclear-deal-talks/
