Is USA using depleted uranium in weapons in Libya?

Mounting alarm over US use of depleted uranium arms in Libya,  Herald Scotland , By Rob Edwards  3 Apr 2011 THE countries involved in air strikes on Colonel Gaddafi’s forces in Libya are coming under pressure to ban the use of toxic depleted uranium (DU) weapons because of the dangers they could pose to civilians……
critics say that the US has sometimes been economical with the truth about the use of DU weapons. “We continue to seek a cast-iron guarantee that depleted uranium has not been used and will not be used in Libya,” said Kate Hudson, the general secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. “The US has a long history of only admitting to deploying this radioactive material months or years after it has been used.” DU is a radioactive and chemically toxic heavy metal which has been used by UK and US military forces in armour-piercing shells fired in the Gulf, Balkans and Iraq wars, and is thought to be in use by around 18 other countries. When DU weapons burn, they release a hazardous dust.

Fukushima nuclear disaster like a slow motion collision

Q&A: Japan nuclear crisis ‘getting worse’ : World News Australia on SBS, 1 April 11, “…….Where to now for the people around Fukushima? What we’re seeing now, it’s rather like a slow motion collision, taking part over weeks. In a way we’re being reassured all the time it’s not going to get worse. But it is getting apparently worse. Why a doctor chose not to have airport radiation scanning

Radiation exposure, however small, is a known risk to our health. My bottom line: Must I receive radiation for lack of an alternative? In this scenario, thankfully, no. The alternative in this case is that full body pat-down, completely devoid of any radiation exposure. So, for now, I choose the latter

Dr. Cindy Haines: Why I Said ‘No’ to Backscatter Scanning, THE HUFFINGTON POST 1 April 11, There are two types of these advanced imaging technologies: the backscatter scanners [at left] (which use ionizing radiation) and  millimeter-wave scanners[at right] (which emit low-energy waves).

This terminal happened to have the backscatter scanners and — lo and behold — I was chosen for it. My only alternative? The controversial physical screen. And surely nothing says “Good Morning” like a full body pat-down, with lots of on-lookers to enjoy the show.

I was certainly not happy about this invasive maneuver but I found it to be preferable over the quicker and more efficient scan. This, despite the fact that I have researched and written on the very low risk that is associated with these backscatter scanners. So why my refusal of the scan? Continue reading

Fukushima is bad enough, but the nuclear waste problem is worse

Weighing up the cost of nuclear power  The Guardian, Mike Gatehouse 29 March 2011 Nuclear power is unsafe because the consequences of any accident are so dire. Despite George Monbiot’s perverse conclusion (Why Fukushima made me stop worrying about nuclear power and love it, 22 March), the disaster at Fukushima has so far caused the evacuation of over 100,000 people, the suspension of fisheries and agriculture over a large area and a ban on the consumption of drinking water by babies in a city of 12 million.

The reactors are not yet under control, four out of six of them are so badly damaged that they can never be used again and the whole site will probably have to be abandoned and cordoned off for decades, at astronomic expense. Nuclear power is also more accident-prone, because fission reactors are so hard to control and the complexity of the containment structures and control systems makes them highly susceptible to design, construction and operator error. The worst aspect, however, is that nuclear power generates waste and decommissioning products, which cannot be safely disposed of, are a major security threat and must be guarded, monitored and cooled for decades.

Every time we commission a nuclear power plant we are taking out a massive mortgage that future generations will have to pay for. Yet we cannot know that they will have the will, the capacity, the skills and the resources to do so…..Letters: Weighing up the cost of nuclear power | From the Guardian | The Guardian

Nuclear power a public health danger even without earthquakes

A study by the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP) found that the incidence of thyroid cancer in three counties near the Indian Point nuclear plant in New York state were about twice the U.S. rate.

It’s time to say ‘no’ to nuclear power – The Holland Sentine, lLaketown Township, MI, 27 march 11 —The crisis in Japan is making many of us think twice about nuclear power, and with good reason. In many ways, we cannot afford nuclear power. According to a report from the Union of Concerned Scientists, the cost of subsidizing nuclear power exceeds the value of the power produced. No wonder the private sector doesn’t want to finance new nuclear power plants. Continue reading

Russian scientist estimate 100s of thousands of Chernobyl fallout deaths

Russian scientists recently reviewed the impacts of Chernobyl’s 1986 meltdown, and concluded: “The calculations suggest that the Chernobyl catastrophe has already killed several hundred thousand human beings in a population of several hundred million that was unfortunate enough to live in territories affected by the fallout. The number of Chernobyl victims will continue to grow over many future generations.”

Unsafe at any remove? Nuclear energy: time for a closer look SFGate, Steve Heilig : 27 March 11, Is atomic energy safe? Proponents say it is. Then doubters point to a near-disaster. Following this, safeguards against that particular accident are engineered into the system and proponents say ‘See? It’s safe now!’ and the dance goes on. The dialectic sounds like a broken record.” – Garrett Hardin, 1976

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has just affirmed that no real changes are being considered for US reactors following the Japan earthquake. President Obama and energy secretary Chu likewise continue to support nuclear power as an important part of American energy policy. But perhaps officials there, and President Obama, who has been a supporter of nuclear energy, need to take a closer look. Given the stakes, a much closer look.. Continue reading

George Monbiot fails to see the impact of nuclear power on indigenous peoples

George Monbiot’s nuclear mistakes | Green Left Weekly, Jim Green, 26 March 11,”……… Monbiot takes offence at ill-informed, moralistic objections to nuclear power. Fair enough. Yet two of the greatest objections to nuclear power both have a moral dimension — one because of its particularity, the other because of its generality. The particular moral problem concerns the disproportionate impacts the nuclear industry has on indigenous peoples. The industry’s racism is grotesque. Continue reading

We cannot really control nuclear power – it is a devilish problem

Nuclear reactors are not evil: they produce the power that runs the modern world. They are present on every continent, often near urban and industrial megacomplexes. This is prima facie good……But nuclear reactors are the devil, because in our critically unstable world we cannot be sure of remaining in a position to control them.

Is it reasonable to stake our future on a devilishly uncontrollable, potentially lethal technology?

Pact With the Devil — Thoughts on Our Nuclear Future , HUFFINGTON POST, Ervin Laszlo, 25 March 11, Nuclear power is not evil; it’s the devil. Evil of our own making can be overcome. The devil cannot be overcome, not even if we ourselves conjure him into being. This is why staking our future on nuclear power is a pact with the devil.

Spokesmen for the nuclear lobby claim nuclear reactors are safe. Continue reading
