Urgency to protect Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant from rising waters

Nebraska Nuke Plant Owners Tell Management To Buy Anything They Need To Ward Off Rising Floodwaters, Business Insider, Ricky Kreitner| Jun. 20, 2011  But just to be sure, they are allowing the plant’s management to skip the normal procurement process and buy anything it might need to protect Fort Calhoun from the still-rising waters of the flooded Missouri River.

World Nuclear News today reports that the Omaha Public Power District, which owns and operates the Fort Calhoun plant, issued that directive June 16. In a statement, the public utility said that high volumes of water released from up-river by the Army Corps of Engineers “continue to pose a threat to the electric system and generation facilities along the river.”

Yesterday, a second Nebraska nuclear plant facing rising floodwaters was put under a “notification of unusual event,” (as the Fort Calhoun plant was on June 6th). The second plant, the Cooper Nuclear Station, is located south of Omaha and owned by the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). A “notification of unusual event” is the least urgent of four classifications that can be declared in a nuclear emergency.

Rain is forecast for the Greater Omaha area for the next three days……http://www.businessinsider.com/nebraska-nuke-plant-owners-tell-management-to-buy-anything-they-need-to-ward-off-rising-floodwaters-2011-6

Nuclear power getting dearer, renewables cheaper – Germany is right

Germany is right to opt out of nuclear The rejection of nuclear power is a result not of German angst but of economic thinking. We must invest in renewable energyUlrich Beckguardian.co.uk,  20 June 2011    Ultimately, the rejection of nuclear is not a result of German angst but of economic thinking. In the long run, nuclear power will become more expensive, while renewable energy will become cheaper. But the key point is that those who continue to leave all options open will not invest. The menace of humanity’s growing environmental footprint

Are we all doomed?, New Statesman, Martin Rees,11 June 11 “…….We have entered an era when human beings pose a greater threat than nature to the earth’s future. This started with the invention of nuclear weapons. Robert McNamara, US defence secretary during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, later said: “We came within a hair’s-breadth of nuclear war without realising it. It’s no credit to us that we escaped – [Nikita] Khrushchev and [John F] Kennedy were lucky, as well as wise.”
The threat of global nuclear annihilation involving tens of thousands of bombs has been in abeyance since the end of the cold war. But, in future decades, a global political realignment could lead to a stand-off between new superpowers which could be handled less well or less luckily than the Cuban crisis was. In the meantime, there is more risk than ever that smaller nuclear arsenals will be used in a regional context, or even by terrorists……
Humankind’s collective footprint is growing. It may irreversibly degrade our environment as our numbers grow and we each consume more. Advanced technology threatens us with other vulnerabilities…….
“The bells which toll for mankind, are – most of them, anyway – like the bells on Alpine cattle; they are attached to our own necks and it must be our fault if they do not make a cheerful and harmonious sound.”

Anger of Japanese as thousands protest against nuclear power

AUDIO Thousands protest against nuclear power in Japan, ABC Radio AM Mark Willacy reported this story on Monday, June 13, 2011 “…MARK WILLACY: Marching on the headquarters of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, thousands of Japanese rallied against nuclear power in one of the biggest demonstrations since the triple disaster.”I’m really worried that my children’s kids will be born with defects,” says Yu Matsuda, holding her young daughter.

“I have no choice but to live in the radiation zone even though it’s dangerous,” says school teacher Yoshihisa Satou.

Last week, radioactive strontium-90 was found as far away as 60 kilometres from the crippled Fukushima plant. And that’s a particular worry, because strontium has a half-life of 30 years and is known as a bone-seeker because it can cause bone cancer and leukaemia.  And now radioactive caesium above legal limits has been detected in tea, grown in Shizuoka more than 350 kilometres away from the nuclear plant….

Threat of nuclear war and ecological calamity is not diminishing

“One Week on Earth” – Michael Tobias – Green Conversations – Forbes 13 June 11 “…..Sweden: A new report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute declares that with over 5,000 nuclear weapons ready for use just within the U.S., Russia, France and Britain – and a total of 20,530 nuclear weapons known to exist – the threat of nuclear war is not diminishing. A single mad person, with the stroke of a key, could cause the greatest ecological calamity since the extinction of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago….

America -“business as usual” despite growing ecological issues

“One Week on Earth” – Michael Tobias – Green Conversations – Forbes 13 June 11 America: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency struggles to safeguard Americans from greenhouse gasses, mercury poisoning and a Who’s Who of environmental toxins, while the very powers of government that created the legislation in the first place, such as the Clean Air Act signed into law by President Nixon, adopt the old, tired rhetoric of jobs versus the environment. Some acknowledge serious ecological issues confronting Americans while they engage in promoting business as usual.

USA nuclear plants unprepared for disaster

U.S. raises concern about nuclear disaster plans June 6, 2011(CNN) — U.S. nuclear power plants keep plans for dealing with a severe accident close at hand, but many of them need updating and nearly half the plants don’t include them in regular drills, regulators said Monday.

Our inter-connected world

Worldshift: We Are Learning to Live In a Living Universe, Forum on science and Spirituality, by DUANE ELGIN on MAY 30, 2011 The most fundamental question facing humanity is this: At its foundations, is the universe dead or alive? In short, was Plato correct when, more than two thousand years ago, he said: “The universe is a single living creature that encompasses all living creatures within it.” ….

… Where a dead-universe perspective generates alienation, environmental destruction and despair, a living-universe perspective generates feelings of communion, stewardship, and the promise of a higher pathway for humanity. Although the idea of a living universe has ancient roots in human experience, it is now radically new as the frontiers of modern science cut away superstition and reveal the authentic mystery, subtlety, and aliveness of our cosmic home….http://ervinlaszlo.com/forum/2011/05/30/learning-to-live-in-living-universe/

Close down Indian Point Nuclear Reactor -say hundreds of New Yorkers

Hundreds of New Yorkers tell the NRC: Shut Down Indian Point! | Greenpeace USA, 4 June 11,”.……At the meeting, NRC officials were evasive and refused to give specific answers to the public’s questions about the lack of an evacuation plan, the impacts from an earthquake, on-going leaks from Indian Point, and more. Representatives of New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Eliot Engel underlined the need to involve the public in the evaluation process. Many speakers who took the stage last night called the regulatory agency’s credibility into question and underlined its close ties to the nuclear industry. Indeed, the NRC has never denied a nuclear company’s request for a license extension; it’s nothing more than a radioactive rubberstamp for the dangerous old reactors that threaten millions of Americans.
