Anger in Japan, over nuclear devastation of Fukushima man-made disaster

“Foreigners think the Japanese are sheep,” said one of them, Kuniko Tanioka. “But we’re raising our voices now, saying no to nuclear power, no to reactivation.”

“The top people in the company that caused radiation contamination are still in their executive boardrooms, drawing high salaries. That’s odd, isn’t it?”

Japan, complacent beneath the American nuclear umbrella, has in fact
contributed remarkably little to the cause of nuclear disarmament.
Note, besides, [Prime Minister Yoshihiko] Noda’s reference to “nuclear
devastation in war,” and what that leaves unsaid — namely, nuclear
devastation in peace. Continue reading

Nonaligned nations summit – Iran calls for nuclear arms ban

Iran opens nonaligned summit with calls for nuclear arms ban Washington Post, 26 Aug 12 TEHRAN, Iran — Iran opened a world gathering of self-described nonaligned nations Sunday with a slap at the U.N. Security Council and an appeal to rid the world of nuclear weapons, even as Tehran faces Western suspicions that it is seeking its own atomic bombs.

Iran seeks to use the weeklong gathering — capped by a two-day summit of Non-Aligned Movement leaders — as a showcase of its global ties and efforts to challenge the influence of the West and its allies. Among those expected to attend include U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, whose nation remains
an important Iranian oil customer as Tehran battles Western sanctions over its nuclear program…. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/iran-opens-nonaligned-summit-with-calls-for-nuclear-arms-ban/2012/08/26/4c363ec2-ef63-11e1-b74c-84ed55e0300b_story.html

The sex assault case against Julian Assange has contradictions

Julian Assange hopeful a photo could help clear him of sexual assault allegations Herald Sun, Abul Taher Daily Mail August 27, 2012  IT seems an unremarkable image: a group of friends smiling broadly. But it is the photograph Julian Assange hopes will clear his name.

The Mail on Sunday has published a photo of a beaming woman, pictured with Assange and three other people, who would later tell police that 48 hours before the picture was taken, the WikiLeaks founder pinned her down in her flat and sexually assaulted her.

If the case ever reaches court – Mr Assange is currently holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London – his lawyers will argue that the photograph undermines the 33-year-old woman’s entire story. And, they claim, there is more.

In the two days after the alleged assault in Sweden, Mr Assange and Woman A, as she is known, attended a conference and two dinner parties where it is claimed they were practically inseparable. During one party, Woman A tweeted that she was “with the world’s coolest, smartest people!”…..

No more sky diving into Navy nuclear base

Skydivers jump into Navy nuclear base http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20120824/BLOG46/708249815, August 24, 2012 ST. MARYS, Ga. — Airport officials in southeast Georgia have decided to revoke the license of a skydiving business operating there after two skydivers missed the airfield and landed on a high-security submarine base less than three miles away.

The Florida Times-Union reports  that the St. Marys Airport Authority voted this week to revoke The Jumping Place’s permit to operate from the small airport.

The U.S. Navy briefly held the two skydivers earlier this month after they landed on the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base. The base is the East Coast hub for the Navy’s nuclear missile-armed submarines.

Before the airport board’s vote Wednesday, Navy Cmdr. Jeff Pafford told the authority, “This cannot happen again.”

The Jumping Place owner Cathy Kloess said she’s started looking into areas to relocate her business. Information from: The Florida Times-Union .

Revealed: Assange ‘rape’ accuser linked to notorious CIA operative

RS By David Edwards , December 6, 2010 One of the women accusing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of sex crimes appears to have worked with a group that has connections to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

James D. Catlin, a lawyer who recently represented Assange, said the sex assault investigation into the WikiLeaks founder is based on claims he didn’t use condoms during sex with two Swedish women.

Swedish prosecutors told AOL News last week that Assange was not wanted for rape as has been reported, but for something called “sex by surprise” or “unexpected sex.” One accuser, Anna Ardin, may have “ties to the US-financed anti-Castro and anti-communist groups,” according to Israel Shamir and Paul Bennett, writing for CounterPunch.

While in Cuba, Ardin worked with the Las damas de blanco (the Ladies in White), a feminist anti-Castro group.

Professor Michael Seltzer pointed out that the group is led by Carlos Alberto Montaner who is reportedly connected to the CIA………

In August, Assange told Al-Jazeera that the accusations were “clearly a smear campaign.”

“We have been warned that, for example, the Pentagon is planning on using dirty tricks to destroy our work,” Assange told the Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet.

The WikiLeaks founder said he was told to be careful of “sex traps.” Had Assange fallen for one of those traps? “Maybe. Maybe not,” he said.

Catlin observed that both Ardin and Sofia Wilén, the second accuser, sent SMS messages and tweets boasting of their conquests following the alleged “rapes.”….

“The exact content of Wilén’s mobile phone texts is not yet known but their bragging and exculpatory character has been confirmed by Swedish prosecutors. Niether Wilén’s nor Ardin’s texts complain of rape,” Catlin said.

Ardin has also published a seven step guide on how to get revenge on cheating boyfriends. … http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/12/06/assange-rape-accuser-cia-ties/#.UDEM4yk0cbk.twitter

Taiwan cuts back on nuclear power

Gov’t seeking ways to cut back on nuclear power use: minister, China Post, 20 Aug 2012, TAIPEI-A comprehensive review of Taiwan’s energy supply structure is underway to comply with the nation’s policy of reducing its dependence on nuclear power, Economics Minister Shih Yen-shiang said. Finding ways to use alternative energy sources is of great importance because the country’s three existing nuclear power plants will be
taken offline once their licenses expire, Shih noted..

… In the three-hour closed door meeting, Premier Sean Chen exchanged views with some 20 industry representatives about how to develop renewable energy and cut down on carbon emissions.

One of 10 conclusions reached at the meeting is that the government will continue to push for “a reduction of nuclear energy use in a stable manner,” according to a statement released by the Cabinet.

Source: NHK WORLD English
Date: Aug. 17, 2012

Japan has been forced to put off resuming beef exports to the United States at the last minute, due to US concerns about effects of last year’s nuclear accident.

Shipments were due to resume on Saturday starting with cattle processed that day.

Japanese beef exports to the United States had been suspended for over two years after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki.

But Japanese officials say the US side requested a halt on Thursday, saying it wanted to check how Japan is inspecting beef and managing feed to prevent radioactive contamination.
