What you need to know about Darlington’s reactors Greenpeace – August 31, 2012 These are the frequently asked questions about Darlington Ontario’s nuclear reactors. If this information leaves you concerned and you want the government to re-consider their plan, sign up below. Why “Stop Darlington”?

The biggest threat to building a green energy sector in Ontario is the $36 billion earmarked to build two new, and re-build four outdated, risky nuclear reactors at Darlington, 60 kilometers east of Toronto.

Spending billions to rebuild old reactors and to build new ones at Darlington comes with unnecessary accident risks, damages Lake Ontario, and burdens future generations with stockpiles of radioactive waste. Continue reading

Rising danger of a nuclear disaster in UK

UK nuclear plant disaster is ‘inevitable This is Somerset, 8 Oct 12 A specialist engineer who worked at Hinkley Point nuclear power station for almost 30 years has attacked the nuclear industry’s approach to safety and predicted that a Fukushima-type disaster in the UK was
“almost inevitable”.Peter Smith’s comments were made at and after a weekend rally in Bridgwater against the proposed new Hinkley C nuclear power station……

Mr Smith, who was head of the ‘electrical instrumentation section’ at Hinkley, said: “Over the years, I became more and more aware of the dangers and dark side of nuclear power. The industry denies that it ever puts profit before safety but this is a lie. I have seen
corner-cutting from the design stage onwards.

“The nuclear industry suffers from the delusion that nuclear power is safe. They said that after Three Mile Island, they said it after Chernobyl and they said it after Fukushima. Do we really want Hinkley Point to be the next major disaster?”

He said that the likelihood of a major accident in the UK is increasing…..

UK’s nuclear power project – a dead cat

It’s a great opportunity to add your voice to the growing number of people saying no to new nuclear – and if this week is anything to go by, that list includes most of the nuclear industry itself.

Even blank cheques from government can’t make nuclear power work, Greenpeace UK – 4 October 2012 The government has bent over backwards to accommodate the nuclear industry. Yet despite promising billions of pounds of public subsidy, it seems unable to find anyone willing to build a nuclear reactor.

Last year, the German utilities RWE and E.ON pulled out of new nuclear and put their consortium, Horizon, up for sale. Bidding closed last Friday. There were no credible offers. Continue reading

Questions on USA’s rising levels of ionising radiation

Radiation Levels Rising In The USA http://whtc.com/blogs/post/rkingman/2012/oct/03/radiation-levels-rising-usa/ by Red KingmanSo why are radiation levels on the rise here inthe United States?  Why have governments all around the world RAISED the “safe levels” for radiation exposure?  What happened on September 17th?  Why did Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sign an agreement with Japan to continue pruchasing their seafood even though it is NOT being tested for radiation following the explosion and resulting release of radiation into the ocean?  Why aren’t environmentalists up in arms over THIS, rather than trying to close all of the coal plants?

Does anyone have the answers to these questions?

Japan could become world’s renewable energy hub

Japan stokes renewable energy plan PILITA CLARK – ENVIRONMENT CORRESPONDENT Financial Times, Oct. 03 2012,First it was Europe and then it wasChina, but as the world absorbs the impact of Tokyo’s decision tophase out nuclear power over the next three decades, some are starting to ask whether the next big centre of renewable energy growth will be Japan.

“It is absolutely possible,” says Jim Long of Greentech Capital Advisors, a global adviser on renewable energy, headquartered in New York.“This could provide a significant stimulus for the development of a major renewable energy market in Japan, and underpin the global
ambitions of a number of large Japanese industrial companies in the clean energy sector.” Continue reading

UK’s supposedly ‘private sector’ nuclear power plan is falling apart

Meanwhile, those still interested in financing, building and operating the proposed new reactors are falling like nine pins.

So much of the risk is being transferred to the customer and the taxpayer that you begin to wonder what the point of a private sector solution is in the first place…..

UK is haring off down the wrong path on new nuclear power plants Telegraph, 3 Oct 12 In a recent blog, Sir Bernard Ingham, former press secretary to Margaret Thatcher, posed an important question: do we want nuclear at any price? By Jeremy Warner,
Sir Bernard is an avid supporter of new nuclear build, so the answer he invites – no – is all the more significant. Much of Britain’s existing stock of nuclear generating capacity is due
to be de-commissioned over the next decade, and as things stand, we still don’t really know what’s going to replace it. The moment of truth gets ever closer…

.. the subsidy demanded by potential operators via guaranteed charges is heading for the stratosphere, threatening to lock-in high energy prices for generations to come. Continue reading
