Mounting pile of uranium not really secure in Denver uranium mine
Uranium sifted from groundwater piles up inside mine west of Denver, By Bruce Finley, The Denver Post, 13 Nov 11 Nearly three-quarters of a ton of concentrated uranium removed from groundwater to protect metro-area drinking water is piling up at Cotter Corp.’s defunct mine west of Denver.
Cotter workers are storing it in plastic tanks inside a building at the Schwartzwalder mine, which is staffed by day but unguarded at night. State environmental overseers were notified last month of the mounting uranium. On Thursday, state officials could not address disposal, whether the uranium could be sold or whether there are security concerns.
However, on Friday morning, state health department spokesman Mark Salley said Cotter has a “radioactive materials license for management of residuals from contaminated groundwater treatment. The license specifies disposal at a licensed facility off-site, but a licensee could take the material for reprocessing if their license allowed it.
“There are no such licensees in Colorado,” Salley said.

Environmental groups to tale legal action, if NRC approves Westinghouse nuclear reactor design

Environmental group raises new objections to AP1000 reactor Charlotte Business Journal by John Downey, Senior Staff Writer, November 10, 2011 Environmental groups opposed toWestinghouse ’s AP1000 nuclear reactor contend the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has no authority to approve the reactor’s design until it considers design changes recommended by the Fukushima Task Force on lessons learned from the Japanese nuclear accident.
John Runkle, an environmental lawyer from Chapel Hill, says the AP1000 Oversight Group is prepared to go to court to attempt to block certification of the design if, as expected, the commission goes ahead with approval. Continue reading
New safety worries about Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear plant design
The public interest groups maintain that the NRC has given priority to the construction schedules of these corporations instead of resolving the continuously emerging problems with the design.
Nuclear Expert Cites New Concerns About Westinghouse Reactor Design Based On Fukushima Disaster ENews Park Forest 10 Nov 11 Groups say design approval can’t legally be finalized until Fukushima lessons are incorporated, and that NRC plans to shove costly design corrections onto Georgia, South Carolina customers DURHAM, N.C. – Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen has documented at least six areas of unreviewed safety concern involving the Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear plant design based on the ongoing Fukushima disaster, and he says these problems require full technical review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission before the plant design can be “certified.” Today public interest groups filed his report – which expands on problems identified by a federal task force – with NRC commissioners who are considering a final vote on the plant design without responding to a long list of problems raised earlier by experts within and outside the industry.
The Fairewinds report and the legal motion can be found at www.ncwarn.org. A video presentation by engineer Gundersen will be posted today both at www.ncwarn.org and at www.fairewinds.com Continue reading

500 abandoned uranium mines contaminated Navajo land
Summit focuses on uranium contamination on Navajo land, News 13 FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) – Tuesday marks the start of a yearly summit focused on the Navajo Nation’s problems with uranium contamination. Six federal agencies, along with tribal officials and others are gathering in Farmington, N.M., for the 3-day summit. Jared Blumenfeld of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Navajo President Ben Shelly are set to give keynote speeches.
The reservation has more than 500 abandoned mines. Federal and tribal officials have screened hundreds of structures for potential contamination, replacing some of them. They’ve also tested unregulated water sources. Officials who developed a 5-year plan to address the contamination are expected to give progress reports this week.
Concerns over safety and the health of its people led the Navajo Nation to ban uranium mining on the reservation in 2005. http://www.kold.com/story/15983987/summit-focuses-on-uranium-contamination-on-navajo

Ex-supervisor for Tucker firm admits falsifying nuclear plant docs, AJC 9 Nov 11 “….John E. Delk, 40, a former crew supervisor for Williams Specialty Services, changed his not guilty plea at a hearing where he told a U.S. magistrate he certified work that he knew had not been completed at the nation’s only current reactor construction project…..
Records show that in August, 2010 a completed form falsely purported to state micrometer readings of cables installed to provide energy to equipment, including safety equipment inside the containment structure at Unit 2 of the Watts Bar nuclear plant in Spring City.
A court filing in Correll’s case said inspection records were falsified on the spur of the moment when Correll was told to “hurry up and get it done.” Delk was Correll’s supervisor…. http://www.ajc.com/business/ex-supervisor-for-tucker-1221283.html

Alarm about cracks in Davis Besse nuclear plant
Ohio: Scientists Sound Alarm on Nuclear Plant, NYT By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS November 8, 2011 A watchdog group is questioning the soundness of a nuclear plant where a 30-foot hairline crack was recently discovered. The crack was found in the thick concrete on the outside of the reactor containment building at the Davis-Besse plant outside Toledo. Further inspections found numerous, tiny cracks on the building’s facade. The Union of Concerned Scientists has written the Nuclear Regulatory Commission asking whether the concrete walls were built to adequate engineering specifications. The plant’s owner, the FirstEnergy Corporation, says that the walls were designed properly and that the building has been inspected thoroughly. The plant has been shut down for installation of a new 82-ton reactor head, replacing one that cracked… http://www.nytimes.co/2011/11/09/us/ohio-scientists-sound-alarm-on-nuclear-plant.html
