France vying with South Korea, to market nuclear power to South Africa
France has emerged as one of several countries, including South Korea, whose companies have been courting South Africa as it shops for multi-billion dollar nuclear power plants….In 2007 Areva submitted a proposal to power utility Eskom to build several nuclear plants in a tender process which was later scrapped due to its steep cost.

Electricite de France admits to safety flaws in 34 nuclear reactors
EDF says flaw in 34 reactors could affect safety Feb 11, 2011 PARIS, (Reuters) – France’s EDF has detected a technical flaw in 34 of its 58 nuclear reactors that could have an impact on safety, the utility said in a note on its website.
EDF’s 900 megawatt reactors, built in the 1970s, do not meet current standards of precision required for measuring water flows in their water injection systems. AREVA trying to boost nuclear sales, will change reactor design
Areva May Revise Atmea Nuclear-Reactor Design to Work With EDF, – Bloomberg, By Francois de Beaupuy – Feb 11, 2011 , Areva, France’s state-controlled maker of nuclear plants, may amend the design of the Atmea reactor it’s developing with a Japanese partner to meet demands of Electricite de France SA and boost its export chances…Claude Jaouen, deputy head of Areva’s reactors and services unit, at a conference in Paris today sponsored by newspaper Les Echos. “EDF wants an optimized Atmea” that may be less complex to build and have different safety options, he said. French and Italian calls for Europe to block nuclear energy
In a desperate attempt to save its nuclear industry, France wants to condemn the whole of Europe to a suicidal energy policy.
The French antinuclear network “Sortir du nucléaire ” and its Italian counterpart “Rete Nazionale Antinucleare” call on the representatives of 27 at the European summit on energy to block nuclear and to save the renewable energy industry by refusing the goal of “carbon-free” electricity proposed by France, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Nuclear reactors under the sea planned by France
France’s DCNS Plans Underwater Nuclear Plant, Echos Says, Bloomberg, By Gregory Viscusi – Jan 20, 2011 France’s DCNS will study the possibility of building underwater nuclear power plants as part of the naval contractor’s planned diversification, Les Echos reported, citing the group’s Chief Executive Officer Patrick Boissier.The 100-meter-long (328 feet) reactor would be sunk at about 100 meters and could supply via cable a town or island of between 100,000 and 1 million people, said Boissier. DCNS builds atomic powered submarines for the French navy.

Mon Dieu, Electricite de France is supposed to pay for nuclear waste storage
Under French law, EDF has to build a portfolio of assets to enable it to pay for the decommissioning of France’s 58 nuclear reactors and radioactive waste storage…EDF was supposed to have set aside enough money by the end of June 2011 for decommissioning of all of its nuclear assets and waste storage. A planned power law gave the utility a five- year extension on the deadline to June 2016.

Nuclear energy industrial espionage
French police suspect industrial espionage after computers stolen from nuclear power company – Winnipeg Free Press, 24 Dec 10, PARIS – French police say thieves have stolen two computers containing confidential information from a power company’s nuclear energy research site.Police say Thursday the burglary — which was discovered by staff on Monday — took place at the Electricite de France office in Chatou west of Paris, even though it is protected by highly secure anti-theft systems.
