India’s uranium radioactivity hotspot

Uranium, metals make Punjab toxic hotspot,  The Times of India. Balwant Garg, TNN, Jun 15, 2010, BATHINDA: After discovery of high levels of uranium in hair samples of a large number of mentally retarded children in Punjab’s Malwa region last year, another study suggests Punjab has become a hotspot of environmental toxicity of multiple types……….. The adverse health effects on plants, animals and humans are visible and some of the studies have proved this. “It’s clear that Punjab is in a deep ecological crisis with its ramifications on socio-economic and cultural aspects of its population,” said Dr Reyes Tirado, a scientist from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, who conducted the study in 50 villages in Muktsar, Bathinda and Ludhiana districts last year under a Greenpeace Research Laboratories investigation.

Bhopal injustice – a prelude to future nuclear injustice for India?

Under the civil liabilities for nuclear damage bill, central to a deal with the controversial nuclear pact with the US, costs for cleaning up a catastrophic failure would end up being paid by the Indian taxpayer…….so that shareholders of large US corporations would not be forced to pay out for sloppy, deadly mistakes…………..

Obama hasn’t learned lessons of Bhopal, Randeep Ramesh  guardian.co.uk 10 June 2010 Foreign companies such as BP are shown the big stick, but Washington offers a big shield for its multinationals abroad

While Barack Obama is lambasting BP for spreading muck in the Gulf of Mexico, he should perhaps pencil in a date with the people of Bhopal when he visits India later this year. While 11 men lost their lives on BP’s watch and the shrimps get coated with black stuff, the chemicals that killed thousands of people in Bhopal in 1984 are still leaching into the ground water a quarter of a century after a poisonous, milky-white cloud settled over the city. High ionising radiation levels in Delhi scrap market

Rainspotting in Bangalore – Greenpeace survey finds radiation 5000 times background levels in Delhi market, INDEPENDENT MINDS, by Grace Boyle F, 14 May 2010 aA survey has today uncovered levels of radioactivity up to 5000 times background levels in Mayapuri scrap market, West Delhi, after the area was previously surveyed and declared safe by government authorities.

“The distance between the contamination ‘hot spots’ that have been discovered today and the people who live and work in Mayapuri is very small, so there is concern as to the effect on their health” said Karuna Raina, nuclear campaigner with Greenpeace India. The survey found dose rate levels of 200-500 micro-Sv/h in certain areas, meaning that the maximum legal dose for a person in a year could be reached after just two to five hours close to these ‘hot spots’, Greenpeace said. The level of dose in the residential area was close to normal. Rainspotting in Bangalore – Greenpeace survey finds radiation 5000 times background levels in Delhi market
