World Health Organisation under the thumb of International Atomic Energy Agency
Nuclear apologists play shoot the messenger on radiation, The Age, Helen Caldicott, April 26, 2011 ”…..In the early days of nuclear power, WHO issued forthright statements on radiation risks, such as its 1956 warning: ”Genetic heritage is the most precious property for human beings. It determines the lives of our progeny, health and harmonious development of future generations. As experts, we affirm that the health of future generations is threatened by increasing development of the atomic industry and sources of radiation.”
After 1959, the organisation made no more statements on health and radioactivity.
What happened?
On May 28, 1959, at the 12th World Health Assembly, WHO drew up an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency. A clause of this agreement says the WHO effectively grants the right of prior approval over any research it might undertake or report on to the IAEA – a group that many people, including journalists, think is a neutral watchdog, but which is, in fact, an advocate for the nuclear power industry. Its founding papers state: ”The agency shall seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity through the world.”
The WHO’s subjugation to the IAEA is widely known within the scientific radiation community,.. http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/nuclear-apologists-play-shoot-the-messenger-on-radiation-20110425-1du2w.html#ixzz1KfXmalLq
“Star” computer virus joins “Stuxnet” attack on Iran’s nuclear program
Iran: Country under attack by second computer virus, The Washington Post, By Thomas Erdbrink and Joby Warrick, , April 25, TEHRAN —An Iranian military official revealed on Monday that the country had been attacked by a new computer virus apparently aimed at nuclear facilities, an acknowledgment that seemed to suggest a broader campaign by foreign saboteurs to undermine Iran’s atomic energy program.
The new computer worm has been dubbed “Stars” by the Iranians and described as an “espionage virus,” although few details were made public. In the same announcement, the military also confirmed continuing problems with an earlier virus, “Stuxnet,” which began wreaking havoc on Iran’s main uranium enrichment facility in 2009…………..http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/iran-country-under-attack-by-second-computer-virus/2011/04/25/AFudkBjE_story.html
Japanese govt raises “acceptable”radiation standard for children
3.8 μSv/h is roughly 6 times the standard for “Radiation Controlled Areas” (0.6 μSv/h or more). The Labour Standards Act prohibits those under the age of 18 from working under these conditions. Forcing children to be exposed to such radiation doses is an exceedingly inhumane decision….”The cancer risk will visibly rise in the future. By setting these standards, the government will steer clear of any liability legally, however not morally.”

On April 19th, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) notified the Board of Education and related institutions in Fukushima Prefecture the level of 20 milli-sievert per year (mSv/y) as a Radiation Safety Standard for schools in Fukushima Prefecture. This is the standard to be used for school grounds and buildings. The Government has indicated that 20 mSv/y is equivalent to 3.8 micro-sievert per hour (μSv/h) measured outdoors. Continue reading
“Nuclear Science Mafia” condemned by judges
“We are always being told that nuclear power is clean and pure.
It’s a complete lie. Who are the people telling it? It’s the scientists who need jobs, postings on nuclear energy boards and state honours,”….Justice Kolse Patil said the government was repeating a lie over and over again so that it would sound true.
Activists of anti-nuclear plant yatra detained THE HINDU, 24 April 11,”………“Why is the government stopping us from going to Jaitapur? Because it does not want the other side of
nuclear energy to reach the people,” Justice Sawant told the meeting. Continue reading
Did Indian police target anti nuclear protestor to kill him?
Retired judges want probe into death, Snehal Rebello, Hindustan Times Tarapur, April 24, 2011 Tabrez Sayekar, 30, a victim of the violence in Jaitapur earlier this week, was fired upon at close range, said campaigners spearheading the movement against the nuclear power plant at Jaitapur. Justice (retired) PB Sawant of the Supreme Court and justice (retired) BG Kolse Patil of the Bombay high court, who are part of the campaign, said a judicial inquiry led by a sitting high court judge should be conducted into the death. The state government had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident three days ago.
“There is suspicion that Tabrez’s death was a targeted killing, and that policemen were injured is not true,” said Sawant. “We don’t trust the magistrate appointed by the state government. We will not accept any conclusions of the report.”
Even when HT, on April 19 contacted Dr Angad Chate, the civil surgeon who monitored the post-mortem report at Ratnagiri Civil Hospital, he said Sayekar succumbed to bullet injuries to his heart, kidney, liver and lungs. But a day later Chate said that just one bullet in the lower abdomen killed Tabrez. When contacted for a clarification on April 21, Chate said, “I have got instructions from the highest authorities not to disclose the report.”…… http://www.hindustantimes.com/Retired-judges-want-probe-into-death/Article1-689000.aspx
Retired judges among 135 anti nuclear protestors arrested in India
Activists of anti-nuclear plant yatra detained THE HINDU, 24 April 11,A three-day Tarapur-Jaitapur anti-nuclear plant yatra was stopped the moment it began and hundreds of activists were detained at Boisar in this district on Saturday.
Activists and supporters, including Justices (retired) B G Kolse-Patil and P.B. Sawant, social activist Vaishali Patil, and Admiral (retd) L Ramdas, were whisked away in police vans from Panchmarg Tarapur, where they had addressed a public meeting in the morning. They were brought to the Boisar police station around 4.30 p.m., along with 135 protesters, and detained under Section 68 of the Bombay Police Act.
While Justices Patil and Sawant were released, the rest continued in detention till late evening.
Chandrakant Pavaskar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Thane (rural), told The Hindu that since the activists were at the police station, “We can continue to detain them under Section 68 for violating prohibitory orders. We have kept them since they are planning to go to Jaitapur.”
Heavy police bandobust was in place. The small lane where the meeting was held was lined with police vans and vehicles. Twice the protesters were prevented from going ahead and at this they sat in dharna on the road, blocking traffic. After much deliberation, they agreed to proceed to the police station……..http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/24/stories/2011042463041300.htm
Allegations of Indian govt making false charges against anti nuclear former judge
Kolse-Patil also sought exemplary compensation from the government for “deliberately prosecuting him on false and concocted charges and subjecting him to mental and physical torture”.
Retired judge alleges torture by govt, moves court, Hindustan Times Mumbai, April 23, 2011 Retired judge BG Kolse-Patil has moved the Bombay high court challenging his prosecution for purportedly breaching prohibitory orders and entering Ratnagiri district to participate in protests against the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power plant. Plutonium and Japan’s censorship of media
Now the Japanese government has moved to crack down on independent reportage and criticism of the government’s policies in the wake of the disaster by deciding what citizens may or may not talk about in public. A new project team has been created by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, the National Police Agency, and METI to combat “rumors” deemed harmful to Japanese security in the wake of the Fukushima disaster…..”The measures include erasing any information from internet sites that the authorities deem harmful to public order and morality…….
Fukushima Residents Seek Answers Amid Mixed Signals From Media, TEPCO and Government. Report from the Radiation Exclusion Zone Asia Pacific Journal Makiko SEGAWA in Fukushima, 1
8 April 11
“……There is one particularly telling example of the media shielding TEPCO by suppressing information. This concerns “plutonium”. According to Uesugi, after the reactor blew up on March 14, there was concern about the leakage of plutonium. However, astonishingly, until two weeks later when Uesugi asked, not a single media representative had raised the question of plutonium at TEPCO’s press conferences.
On March 26, in response to Uesugi’s query, TEPCO stated, “We do not measure the level of plutonium and do not even have a detector to scale it.” Ironically, the next day, Chief Cabinet Secretary Edano announced that “plutonium was detected”. Continue reading
Police crackdown on Jaitapur anti nuclear leaders

Cops tapping our phones, say anti-nuclear plant leaders MidDay

jaitapur |
The Ratnagiri police are allegedly tapping phones and scrutinising call records of leaders including those of political parties to gather crucial information related to the agitation against the proposed nuclear plant in Jaitapur. Senior leaders like B G Kolse-Patil, Justice P B Sawant and Vaishali Patil have alleged that since they are heading the protests, the police are monitoring their movements continuously through technical surveillance.
Cops evasive
When asked about phone tapping, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Raskar was evasive about the issue. “We do sometimes check the phone call records but that does not mean we do it everytime. We will comment on the phone tapping at the right time,” Raskar said…….Retired Justice Sawant said the police often indulged in tapping phone calls of leaders under the pretext of gathering intelligence for public interest, which may not always be the case. “In any case, it will not affect our agitation against the proposed nuclear plant,” he said……http://www.mid-day.com/news/2011/apr/220411-Jaitapur-tapping-phones-anti-nuclear-plant-leaders.htm
Time for World health Organisation to sever connection with International Atomic Energy Agency
The World Health Organization (WHO) must sever its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in place since 1959, and assume independent responsibility in support of international health.
Is the Fukushima nuclear plant breakdown worse than Chernobyl? | San Francisco Bay View, by Janette D. Sherman, M.D., 16 April 11 “….Many pro-nuclear critics have downplayed the risks from Chernobyl, attributing concerns to “radio-phobia”; but documentation of disease is not limited to the human population. With few exceptions, animal and plant systems that were studied demonstrated structural abnormalities in offspring, loss of tolerance and viability, and genetic changes. Wild animals and plants do not drink alcohol, smoke or worry about compensation – so those factors cannot be held responsible. Continue reading
Public has right to know radiation effects of Fukushima and Chernobyl
After Chernobyl, there was a delay in collecting and releasing information. The nuclear industry and many governments are reluctant to alarm the public, but the public has a right to know what the risks are and how, if possible, to avoid those risks – as much as possible…… Decades of research have confirmed that radioisotopes become deposited in various parts of living systems. In humans, I-131 and I-129 concentrate in the thyroid, Cs-137 in soft tissue and Sr-90 in teeth and bones……..
Is the Fukushima nuclear plant breakdown worse than Chernobyl? | San Francisco Bay View, by Janette D. Sherman, M.D., 16 April 11, Love lavished on the children in this orphanage near Chernobyl cannot cure the terrible effects of radiation. ..A little over six months ago I wrote: “Given profound weather effects (earthquakes, floods, tsunamis etc.), human fallibility and military conflicts, many believe that it is only a matter of time before there is another nuclear catastrophe. Nuclear fallout knows no state or national boundaries and will contribute to an increase in illnesses, decrease in intelligence and instability throughout the world. Continue reading
Nuclear Energy Institute writes the rules for Nuclear Regulatory Commission
allowing the NEI to play such a large role means the industry can shape much of what nuclear companies are required to do…….. NRC’s precursor agency, the Atomic Energy Commission, was disbanded after Congress concluded it had become too concerned with promoting nuclear power instead of regulating safety…..over the years, NRC has become more accommodating to the industry.
U.S. Nuclear Regulator Lets Industry Help With the Fine Print by John Sullivan, Special to ProPublica April 13, 2011, “…….Large parts of the guides, issued by NRC, incorporate or endorse material written by the industry’s trade group, the Nuclear Energy Institute[6]. Continue reading
Nuclear Regulatory Commission was all too cosy with Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station
The inspector general concluded that a conflict between the NRC’s twin goals of inspecting the plant to protect public safety and a desire to “reduce unnecessary regulatory burden” on the owner led to the delay in finding the gaping hole.
U.S. Nuclear Regulator Lets Industry Help With the Fine Print by John Sullivan, Special to ProPublica April 13, 2011, In the fall of 2001, inspectors with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were so concerned about possible corrosion at Ohio’s Davis Besse Nuclear Power Station [1] that they prepared an emergency order to shut it down for inspection. But, according to a report [2] from the NRC inspector general, senior officials at the agency held off – in part because they did not want to hurt the plant’s bottom line. Continue reading
New USA standards will allow higher levels of radiation
This is being accomplished, of course, to protect the nuclear lobby and its stakeholders from threats to its financial health.
Radiation Spreads Worldwide. The Poisoning of Mother Earth, Global Reseach Ca, by Freedom Against Censorship
Thailand (FACT), 14 April 11,“…….However, what we’re seeing, according to the American NGO Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility is the application of new standards which will drastically raise the levels of radiation allowed in food, water, air and the general environment. Access to internal US Environmental Protection Agency communications has revealed a 1,000% increase for exposure to Strontium-90; a 3,000-100,000% rise for Iodine-131; a 25,000% rise for Nickel-63 in drinking water. Coverup of Australia’s radiation fallout from atomic tests
British monitoring of water commenced in the 1950s. The records of this early monitoring are unavailable in Australia. As British nuclear weapons testing in Australia commenced in the early l950s, this data is of great importance.
Propaganda Paul Langley’s Nuclear History Blog, 13 April 11, IntroductionFrom 1957 to 1978 the Australian Government carried out dissections on the bodies of people who had died of illness or accident. These dissections were carried out to monitor the amount of Strontium 90, a radioactive element, absorbed by Australians. Strontium 90 was a component of the fallout deposited from nuclear tests conducted in Australia, the Pacific and China. Continue reading
