Will the push to open Yucca Mountain shift Nevada toward Obama?
– Grist  by Kate Sheppard  01 Oct 2008 The Bush administration is pushing full speed ahead with plans to store nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain — and that could affect the presidential race in the battleground state of Nevada, where John McCain and Barack Obama are in a dead heat……………………………Most Nevadans probably aren’t concerned about the particulars of radiation standards set for tens of thousands of years from now — they are just generally opposed to the idea of 77,700 tons of waste being shipped to a site 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The state has petitioned the NRC to reject the federal government’s license application………………………Anti-Yucca sentiment, brought front of mind by the Bush administration’s recent moves to push the project forward, would seem to benefit Obama; he’s opposed to using Yucca as a waste site while McCain is a longtime supporter of the idea.

Nuclear energy is not the answer – General News

Nuclear energy is not the answer
ohmyGov 30 Sept 08 No matter how you pronounce the word..Every election cycle, many republicans and moderate democrats use their elevated soapbox standing to push a nuclear power agenda. With our “addiction to oil” growing ever less tolerable, rhetoric espousing the need for nuclear power to wean ourselves off of oil is growing faster than China’s female gymnasts. The problem is, and always has been, that U.S. dependence on foreign oil has little-to-nothing to do with our use or non-use of nuclear energy.
Consider the fact that nuclear energy, unlike oil, cannot power an automobile, and save for submarines and other large marine vessels, is only useful for generating electricity…………………………

Given the uncertain techniques, high costs, risk of having nuclear secrets fall into the hands of extremists, and NIMBY (not in my back yard) issues for storing and securing nuclear waste, it is mind-numbing that anyone even suggests this strategy as a serious means for reducing foreign oil dependence. Yet every election cycle, the policy reemerges from the dusty shelves of history like a stalker in a cheesy 1970’s horror flick.

Last week, John McCain was that stalker, offering up nuclear power as part of his plan for eliminating foreign oil dependence. …………………….

A smarter strategy than using nuclear energy to power electricity lays in increasing the use of renewable energy technologies like wind, solar, wave energy, and geothermal energy – by far the most underrated potential energy source. If that seven percent market share of the electric power grid can’t be completely replaced by these clean fuels, clean coal and natural gas could easily fill in the supply gaps.

There is no need for nuclear power; like the steam engine, it’s time has passed.

Sale of energy giant to French firm puts our future supply in jeopardy
News.scotsman.com : 26 September 2008The consequences of the government’s effectively pushing British Energy (BE) into the arms of the French state-owned EDF (your report, 25 September) are profound.
The United Kingdom, which was once at the forefront of civil nuclear technology, has handed over control of virtually its entire nuclear power industry not only to a foreign company, but one 80 per cent owned by a foreign government.

Uranium-the-next-energy-crisis-may-cripple-the-western-nations-and-it-has-all-ready-startedmercredi TEMOUST 24 septembre 2008 – “………………….The Tuareg were forced to work in the Uranium mines and supposed to stay silent or be silenced by force ! This was the beginning of the Tuareg uprising in Niger !……………………The Uranium mines may soon be no more since the MNJ intends to blow them up so that the FAN has no longer a source of revenue used to suppress the Tuareg………………………………………Unless the Public throughout the World listens and cries out ! No news comes out or barely any, since the Countries in need of Uranium want a cheap and steady supply of this energy source, none of them are interested in Justice even less in Human Rights, after all they are only 2 to 3 Million Tuaregs left all over North West Africa and who will care…………………

We need our energy more and the Price of our energy supply does not allow for Human rights nor do the Tuareg matter enough for us to care about their faith as long as we get cheap Uranium out of Niger !

However should the Tuareg succeed in destroying the Uranium Mines, we in the West may have to pay dearly for energy and run out of Uranium !

Are we really that shallow in the Western Nations as to let Genocide be happening before our eyes just so we may have enough cheap Uranium for ourselves ?

Shut leaking reactor down – Greens

THE Australian Greens have called for Australia’s only nuclear reactor to be closed down, following reports a chronic water seepage problem has yet to be fixed.

The reactor, commissioned in 2006, is based at Lucas Heights south of Sydney and is managed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

The facility has been out of operation for 11 of the past 14 months,…………….The water seepage was first identified in December 2006 and attempts have been made to address the problem during an extended shutdown.

The reactor is used to make nuclear medicines, neutrons for scientific research and irradiation services.

It does not generate electricity.

“We think the safest solution for this reactor is for it to be shut down and for the waste to be contained properly,” Greens senator Scott Ludlam said today.

Importing nuclear products from South Africa and Canada could continue, he said.

“You’d be surprised how little that reactor was used for.”

Local residents had fought against the construction of the reactor, and there were “always dangers” with nuclear technology.

NDP’s Boucher Rymhs to take nuclear opposition to national level
FAIRVIEW POST (Canada) by Chris Zwick 23 Sept 08 Adele Boucher Rymhs just finished one political campaign earlier this year as the NDP’s candidate in Peace River during the provincial election, now she has put her name forward once again, this time for the federal New Democrats……………………..

“From the beginning it was a matter of us having a concern about water issues, and then we looked into it and soon you find that nuclear is a condition that will effect the whole world and for a long period of time. So it becomes an issue that affects children, the economy and agriculture. It’s more than just energy and environment,” she said.

The more she looked into it, the more she opposed the prospect and she has been a vocal member of several anti-nuclear groups ever since……………………“This is an industry that is almost passé: they have financial difficulties, they have a credibility issue, and there are a lot of concerns that don’t allow them to build in other places,” said Boucher Rymhs. “It’s just a business deal to them; to us it’s a lifestyle.”

Dissident Voice : Rushing into the Wrong Future: The U.S.-India Nuclear Deal, Energy and Security

Rushing into the Wrong Future: The U.S.-India Nuclear Deal, Energy and Security
Diddident Voice by Andrew Lichterman and M.V. Ramana / September 20th, 2008 – “………………………………………..What the Administration will likely not mention is that the deal would actually allow India to expand its nuclear arsenal, permitting it to buy fuel for nuclear power reactors on the international market while using scarce domestic uranium in nuclear weapons production. It will further aggravate tensions with Pakistan, which has signaled that it would respond in kind to a more ambitious Indian nuclear weapons program. Thus, the deal could further fuel an arms race between nuclear-armed neighbors that have fought multiple wars………………………..he nuclear deal is part of a broader set of agreements centering on increased U.S.-India military cooperation and high-tech trade. In the United States an array of corporate interests led by the nuclear industry and arms makers are supporting the deal. They see the possibilities not only for nuclear trade but for big ticket weapons sales, as well as selling other goods and services to India’s elite, only a fraction of the population but a huge new market nonetheless…………………………………the fundamental problems of catastrophic risk and long lasting highly radioactive waste still unsolved. With nuclear power construction having ground to a halt in wealthier countries, the industry has turned its sights to Asia, marketing nuclear technology as a climate friendly solution to the continent’s burgeoning energy demand…………………………….Nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and this nuclear deal are all bad risks for ordinary people everywhere, risks that humanity can no longer afford. It is time to chart a different future.

Political Issues Examiner: McCain and Obama Both Wrong on Nuclear Power

McCain and Obama Both Wrong on Nuclear Power
Examiner Judah Freed – Political Issues Examiner 20 sept 08
“……………………………With due respect for senators Obama and McCain, they both are venting radioactive nonsense. Millions of lives are at stake, so let’s dispel the absurd fantasy of “safe and secure” nuclear power. The only thing “green” about nuclear power is the money its backers hope to pocket…………………………Before the Yucca Mountain facility goes into operation, the project must survive lots of lawsuits. Although litigation may end up before federal judges appointed by the Bush administration, which could skew the outcomes, if the cases are fairly tried on their merits, the facility may never start full-scale operations…………………………………….

No reasonable person can absolutely guarantee 100 percent safety and security along the hundreds or thousands of highway miles between current and future storage sites. Traffic accidents are a danger, of course, and so are attacks or hijackings by nuclear terrorists. How many could die as a result?

If the shipments are sent by train, imagine the catastrophe from even one derailment, as happened recently with the non-nuclear toxic spill inside the rail tunnel under the English Channel. If the waste is transported by air, image the widespread contamination if an aircraft goes down or gets blown up. Again, how many could die as a result?……………………………

Trouble in the pipeline

Trouble in the pipeline
Konrad Kiedrzyński2008-09-17, ostatnia aktualizacja Business Journal 2008-09-18

Central and Eastern Europe faces huge challenges to supplying a cheap, clean and diversified supply of energy to its people………………………The Russian invasion of Georgiahas heightened fears that Russiacould use energy as a tool for political extortion against CEE countries. “Thishas already happened in Belarus, in Ukraine and it happened with Georgia afew years ago,” Nauduzas said…………………….

The development of [nuclear energy] is a distant prospect, however. Although Polandhas signed an agreement to participate in the construction of a 3,200-MWnuclear plant in Ignalina, Lithuania (to be completed between 2015 and 2018), it does not have a nuclearplant of its own.

“Even under the most favorable conditions, the process of creating a nuclear-energy plant lasts over 10 years,” Pawlaksaid. “Meanwhile, social prejudice against the development of nuclear technologies is huge.”

According to Martin Roman, president ofCzech energy giant CEZ, any plan to construct a nuclear power plant may becomeeven more difficult in the future

Courageous decision on Russian nuclear deal – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Courageous decision on Russian nuclear deal
ABC News By Jim Green Sep 19, 2008 “…………the Federal Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Treaties had the courage to recommend against ratification of the uranium export agreement signed by John Howard and Vladimir Putin last September……………………….The claim by the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office (ASNO) that “strict” safeguards conditions will “ensure” that uranium remains in peaceful use has been exposed for the lie that it is. The Safeguards Office conspicuously failed to provide any information to the Joint Standing Committee on the reality of safeguards in Russia. It was left to Friends of the Earth to do the research, the conclusion being that there have been no International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards inspections in Russia since 2001, and there is no reason to believe that this pattern of non-inspection will change in the future.
Not unreasonably, the Joint Standing Committee concluded that: “It is essential that actual physical inspection by the IAEA occurs at any Russian sites that may handle [Australian Obligated Nuclear Materials]. Further, the supply of uranium to Russia should be contingent upon such inspections being carried out.”……………………..If Stephen Smith and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd intend to ratify the Howard/Putin agreement, they will need to argue that Russia is complying with its disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) even though Russia is doing no such thing. Russia’s arsenal of over 14,000 nuclear weapons has an explosive yield equivalent to 200,000 Hiroshima bombs……………..Ratifying a uranium export agreement with a belligerent nuclear weapons states would shred the Rudd government’s credibility ahead of the formal launch of its International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament in October.

NZ nuclear ban will remain whoever wins election – International Herald Tribune

NZ nuclear ban will remain whoever wins election
The Associated Press18 Sept 08

The conservative front-runner in the race to become New Zealand’s
next prime minister says he would make no big changes to the country’s
foreign and defense policies, and the nuclear ban that has long been a
thorn in Washington’s side would remain.

“America will never like our anti-nuclear stance but there’s a
recognition that it’s there and is going to stay,” National Party
leader John Key told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday………………………..Famous for its “Lord of the Rings” wilderness, this South Pacific
nation of 4.3 million people, dairy and sheep farms, wineries and a
handful of cities is in general socially conservative but progressive
on issues such as protecting the environment…………..

Since 1985, U.S. warships have been denied entry into New Zealand
ports because the Pentagon refuses to declare if they are carrying
nuclear weapons. As a result, New Zealand has been effectively dropped
from a joint security treaty with the U.S. and Australia.

Relations have improved recently — U.S. Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice paid a visit in July and praised New Zealand despite
their differences — and both Clark and Key say they are hopeful of
striking a free trade agreement with the United States.

Key said “the independent nuclear policy will remain” if he is prime minister.

International nuclear rules bent for India deal – earth – 08 September 2008 – New Scientist Tech

International nuclear rules bent for India deal

  • 15:46 08 September 2008
  • NewScientist.com news service
  • Anil Ananthaswamy

Is it OK to bend international rules over the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons? That’s the question raised by the lifting of ban that has prevented India from trading in commercial nuclear fuel, equipment and technology.

The Nuclear Supplier’s Group, a cartel of 45 member countries, voted on Saturday in Vienna, Austria, to waive the stringent requirements on nuclear commerce that had been imposed on India ever since it tested a nuclear bomb in 1974.

After decades as a nuclear pariah, India now becomes the only country that can trade in nuclear materials without being a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). The country has refused to sign the NPT, calling it discriminatory because it only allows the US, UK, France, Russia and China to legally possess nuclear weapons.

The NSG’s special waiver exempts India from signing the treaty and is crucial for a proposed nuclear trade agreement between the US and India.

Don’t sell uranium to Russia: Aussie MPs

The Age September 18, 2008 – 12:09PM

Australia should hold off ratifying a treaty to sell uranium to Russia, a Labor-led parliamentary committee has recommended.

Former prime minister John Howard and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed the uranium deal worth $1 billion a year at the APEC meeting in Sydney a year ago.

Russia insists it will use the uranium for civilian nuclear power use and not to make nuclear weapons either in Russia or in another country.

But parliament’s joint standing committee on treaties, chaired by Labor’s Kelvin Thomson, on Thursday recommended the Rudd government not ratify the treaty until it was satisfied Russia was complying with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The government should also be satisfied Russia would not abandon the NPT and give more consideration to recent political events in Russia, such as its conflict with Georgia, the report said.

Russia’s attempts to separate its civilian and military nuclear facilities should be completed and independently verified before sales proceed, the report said.

Inspections of Russian facilities proposed to handle Australian nuclear material should be completed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, it said………………………..

The Australian Greens condemned the treaty and welcomed the committee’s majority report.

West Australian Greens senator Scott Ludlam warned Russia could send Australian uranium to Iran if the sales went ahead.

“The safeguards regime, itself, is inadequate,” he said.

Fellow Greens senator Christine Milne says Russia could not be trusted because it was going back to its “old KGB days”.

India getting into Tarapur-like N-mess, says CPM
The Economic Times 18 Sept 08 Recalling that India had to ‘run from pillar to post’ for nuclear fuel after the US unilaterally terminated the Tarapur accord, the CPM has said the country could land in a similar mess with the 123 Agreement.

The CPM asked the prime minister to dump the deal saying documents submitted to the US Congress by president George Bush made it clear that its terms were in conformity with the Hyde Act.

What is the hidden cost of N-deal?
– msn News 17 Sept 08 “…………………….what is the real price we have to pay for inking the nuclear deal with a nation that leads a unipolar world?  Does the US expect a quid pro quo from India?
Of course, the deal suits America’s commercial interests well. It expects to corner a big share of $ 150 billion worth of investment in nuclear power plants envisaged by India in the next decade. But there are many imponderables as far as the implementation of the nuclear deal is  concerned………………………will the nuclear deal intensify arms race between India and  Pakistan?…………………………the nuclear deal, once it is approved by the US Congress, will have  far-reaching  ramifications. A pertinent question is: Can the government of the day, that too  surviving on a wafer-thin majority,  sign an international agreement or treaty  impacting generations to come without seeking parliamentary approval or people’s mandate?
