Nuclear energy wild card in Japan poll which Democrats likely to lose Asahi Shimbun REUTERS 4 Aug 12, Growing Japanese opposition to nuclear energy after the Fukushima disaster will be a wild card in a general election many expect within months, but politicians on both sides of the aisle agree on one thing: the Democratic Party is likely to fall from power just three years after its historic landslide win….
….Whatever the timing, the DPJ risks facing an anti-nuclear backlash as protests grow against Noda’s decision to restart two atomic reactors to avoid blackouts, despite
safety fears after an earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima nuclear plant in March 2011 the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986……. Continue reading

By Kiyoshi Takenaka FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Aug 1 (Reuters) – Get out of nuclear power and do it fast, angry Fukushima residents told Japanese government officials on Wednesday at a public hearing on energy policy held in an area ravaged by a nuclear disaster that has whipped up opposition to atomic power.
The Fukushima hearing, the ninth out of 11 planned nationwide, sought to gather views on n uclear power’s role in the nation’s energy mix as the government struggles to cover a power shortfall by that could threaten economic growth….. “I want all the reactors in Japan shut
immediately and scrapped,” a grey-haired woman, who introduced herself as a farmer living 65 km (40 miles) from the Fukushima plant, said at the public hearing in the prefecture capital.
“Many people are now aware that the government’s talking of ‘no immediate risk to health’ is tantamount to ‘long-term health risk’,” she said to the applause of about 200 residents packed in a small concert hall.

Japan — The Japanese operator of the nuclear power plant devastated in last year’s disasters received a 1 trillion yen ($12.8 billion) bailout Tuesday, putting it under government ownership, while international experts visited another plant that survived the
tsunami’s impact….
The company faces massive compensation demands from those forced to evacuate and whose land and products were contaminated by radiation leaks following the crisis that began March
11 last year when Japan’s northeast was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami.
TEPCO must also shoulder the enormous costs of decommissioning three reactors with melted cores and placing nuclear fuel rods from a fourth reactor into safe storage……

The government held meetings in Hiroshima and Naha yesterday, the seventh and eight hearings in which members of the public debate what proportion of the nation’s energy should be nuclear-generated.
Eleven percent of the 1,253 people to take part in the meetings so far said atomic power should make up 15 percent of the nation’s energy mix, with 17 percent of people favoring 20-25 percent, according to the Asahi.
The government will take results of the hearings into account in finalizing its energy policy. Final hearings will take place in Fukushima on Aug. 1, and Takamatsu and Fukuoka on Aug. 4, the report said.
At last, Japan gets a political party of opposition to nuclear power – The Greens

Anti-nuclear campaigners launch Japan’s first green party http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/jul/30/japan-green-party-nuclear-power?newsfeed=true Greens Japan promises voters to put environment first and abolish nuclear power plants
Justin McCurry in Tokyo guardian.co.uk, 30 July 2012 Anti-nuclear campaigners in Japan have launched the country’s first green party, more than a year after the triple meltdown at FukushimaDaiichi power plant created a groundswell of opposition to atomic energy.
Greens Japan, created by local politicians and activists, hopes to satisfy the legal requirements to become an officially recognised political party in time for the general election, which must be held by next summer but could come much earlier.
The party said it would offer voters a viable alternative to the two main parties, both of which have retained their support for nuclear power, particularly after the recent decision to restart two nuclear reactors in western Japan. Continue reading

Bulgarian opposition demands vote on nuclear plans SOFIA, July 27 Jul 27, 2012 (Reuters) – Bulgaria’s opposition Socialists on Friday demanded a referendum to challenge the government’s decision to abandon construction of a nuclear power plant, an increasingly divisive issue in the run up to next year’s parliamentary election.
The Socialists submitted more than 770,000 signatures to parliament
calling for the referendum – well above the half million they need to
force a plebiscite.
But analysts said the government would likely resist efforts to revive
a national debate on the fate of the planned Russian-built 2,000
megawatt Belene plant.
The centre-right cabinet cancelled the project in March saying it was
too costly and had failed to attract serious interest from Western
investors.
But the Socialists have argued the country had already sunk too much
money into the project to abandon it. “We do not want important issues
like this – (whether) to develop nuclear energy in Bulgaria or not –
to be decided behind closed doors,” Socialist Party leader Sergei
Stanishev said after lodging the signatures in the parliament……

Nuclear showdown in Delhi’s neighbourhood Rediff, 26 July 12, July 26, 2012 Gopal Krishna “………. The three levels of conflict of interest that have been identified in
the EIA process for nuclear facilities are relevant for the EIA report of the proposed atomic power plant in Fatehabad.
First, the EIA is prepared by consultants who are retained to work on behalf of, and by implication act in the interests of, their client — the nuclear organization proposing the project.
Second, the organization that has been tasked with preparing the EIA to support its proposal for a project is the same which will benefit from the project.
The third conflict of interest is that the regulatory agency Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority is itself regulated by the nuclear power promoters, the Atomic Energy Commission, which is under the direct charge of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The EIA report reveals that the water requirement for the project will be met from Fatehabad branch of the Bhakra canal. Unlike sea as a source of water in the case of Fukushima, in Fatehabad, canal water is the only source for water….” http://www.rediff.com/news/slide-show/slide-show-1-nuclear-showdown-in-delhi-s-neighbourhood-fatehabad/20120726.htm
Japanese government out of step with public on nuclear power
“the demonstrations started out with 500, then several thousand and have now even reached 150,000. Each week, they have grown.”
The dissent on the issue of nuclear energy is bringing to the fore tensions between the political establishment and public will.
“Japan could easily end its reliance on the nuclear energy. From May 5 to July 5, Japan was nuclear free. No single power plant operated and there were no black outs…Japan is the most ideal country for renewable energy. We have sun. We have wind everywhere. What is missing is the political will.”.
After Fukushima, Nuclear Power on Collision Course With Japanese Public The Indypendent, BY TINA GERHARDTJULY 25, 2012 “….. in May, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, in the face of overwhelming public opposition, decided to restart Japan’s nuclear power plants. Now, a growing movement is protesting the decision.
Weekly demonstrations, with turnout initially numbering in the hundreds, have been taking place on Friday evenings in front of the Prime Minister’s office. People show up after work and school. And their numbers have been swelling, reaching into the thousands in recent weeks. Continue reading

Anti nuclear movement becoming a force in Japan’s elections

Fukushima Watch: Anti-Nuclear Candidate Gains Ground in Yamaguchi Race WSJ. 23 July 12, By Yoree Koh Pro- and anti-nuclear candidates are again locked in battle in a Japanese local election. But while pro-nuclear candidates have had the upper hand in all post-Fukushima elections until now, a clean slate of newcomers has made the gubernatorial contest in Yamaguchi prefecture one of the most high-profile among the anti-nuclear camp as recent
polls indicate the candidate opposing nuclear power appears to have a fighting chance for the seat……
The Yamaguchi race is seen as the latest litmus test of voters’ opinions on the soul-searching issue of nuclear power — a controversial topic that has become even more divisive among members of the public than a contentious sales tax hike. Helping further focus attention on the nuclear issue in the upcoming poll is the pending issue of whether to unfreeze a planned nuclear power plant in the town of Kaminoseki…..
Perhaps the most significant figure to emerge from the two polls is that about 71% of respondents in the Asahi survey said they were against construction plans for the Kaminoseki nuclear plant. http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2012/07/23/fukushima-watch-anti-nuclear-candidate-gains-ground-in-yamaguchi-race/
