Thousands of Germans protest against nuclear power Bloomberg  2 April 11, BERLIN Several thousand Germans demanding an end to the use of nuclear energy have taken part in nationwide demonstrations, including a rally outside of energy company RWE’s headquarters.Police said about 3,000 people protested Saturday outside of RWE’s headquarters in Essen, according to the DAPD news agency.

On Friday, RWE filed a lawsuit demanding two of its nuclear reactors that are to be taken off the grid in the wake of Japan’s Fukushima disaster be allowed to remain operational.

About 7,000 people took part in anti-nuclear protests in Bremen. Virginia has new community organisation to stop uranium mining

Organization forms to push to keep ban on uranium mining | GoDanRiver.com, By John Crane, 28 march 11, A group of Pittsylvania County residents has formed a grassroots organization to oppose lifting the ban on uranium mining and milling in the commonwealth.
The citizens established Piedmont Residents in Defense of the Environment, a nonprofit, to be an environmental watchdog, monitor issues and hold government officials accountable for their actions, said PRIDE President Karen Maute.
“PRIDE will actively promote keeping the ban on uranium mining in Virginia and seek to empower the communities to bring awareness of other issues that have negative impact on citizen health, the environment and the economy,” the group stated in a news release……..

Nuclear cargo ignites ‘alarm’ in U.K. Bruce Power’s spent generators headed to Europe By RANDY BOSWELL, Postmedia News February 16, 2011 It’s been controversially approved for a Great Lakes crossing by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, but a radioactive shipload of decommissioned steam generators from Ontario’s Bruce Power plant is now headed for a rough ride overseas, where a coalition of British municipalities is urging the U.K. government to prevent the atomic cargo from passing close to Ireland and Scotland.
The Nuclear Free Local Authorities, an umbrella group that includes 75 local governments throughout the British Isles, has expressed its “deep alarm” that the Canadian shipment of “highly radioactive waste” -16 retired generators, each the size of a school bus -is expected to skirt the U.K. coastline sometime this year en route to a Swedish recycling plan
About 90 per cent of the steel is to be decontaminated at the Studsvik recycling facility in Sweden and sold in world metal markets.
