The News That Matters about the Nuclear Industry Fukushima Chernobyl Mayak Three Mile Island Atomic Testing Radiation Isotope

Mainstream media has gone quiet about Fukushima radioactive sea flows to USA

Media Silent on Fukushima Radiation Impact in US http://www.opednews.com/articles/Media-Silent-on-Fukushima-by-Brian-Lynch-130108-588.html
By Brian Lynch OpEdNews Op Eds 1/8/2013 Sometimes big news stories can only be seen by the shadows they cast.  You would think that it should be easy to find detailed updates on the Fukushima disaster’s impact on our fishing industry, milk production, global radiation distribution patterns, etc.  You would be mistaken. The massive media coverage following the initial disaster has fallen nearly silent.  Some frustrated environmental advocates have suggested that there is a media blackout.  Probably not, but media follow-up stories are few and far between these days.
In July of last year there were major stories about Fukushima and the  plume of radiation reaching across the Pacific Ocean towards North America.  On July 16, 2012, Deborah Dupre of the Examiner reported the following:

“As hair falls out of a Fukushima victim’s head, a new German study reports that North America’s West Coast will be the area most contaminated by Fukushima cesium of all regions in Pacific in 10 years, an “order-of-magnitude higher” than waters off Japan, according to a new German study followed by a former New York Times journalist going inside the no-entry zone and reporting radiation levels over 10 times higher than Tepco’s data.”

The article was accompanied by this scary graphic:

Rupert Murdoch shows his ignorance about climate change

News-Limited1Murdoch right on carbon and trees, were it that simple, The Age, Tom
Arup.  January 8, 2013 Media mogul Rupert Murdoch was right to say the
world’s forests are growing faster and thicker because there is more
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a leading climate scientist says.
But it does not mean the world is better off for rising greenhouse gas
emissions.
Mr Murdoch tweeted to 388,000 followers on Monday: ”World growing
greener with increased carbon. Thirty years of satellite evidence.
Forests growing faster and thicker.”
Mr Murdoch then referred followers to an article on the topic in The
Wall Street Journal last week by Matt Ridley, a prominent climate
change sceptic.
CSIRO’s Pep Canadell, also executive director of the Global Carbon
Project, said it was correct to say that increased concentration of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere meant vegetation is becoming
greener….. But Dr Canadell said it did not mean the proportion of
total human greenhouse gases being absorbed by forests and other
terrestrial carbon sinks had increased as forests had become greener.
Studies by the Global Carbon Project have found the accumulation of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is faster than the growth of
terrestrial carbon sinks such as forests…… Forests can also only
absorb so much carbon dioxide, and will reach a saturation point. That
saturation point could be reached within the century, he said.
Nor does the increased ”greening” of forests due to higher carbon
dioxide emissions mean the loss of global forests has stopped.
A 2010 study by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation found that
between 2000 and 2010 5.2 million hectares of forest a year was lost
globally, an area about the size of Costa Rica.

The Murdoch media octopus to grab more power in USA

Will the FCC Give Rupert Murdoch the Powerful Gift of Media Consolidation?, 26 November 2012   By Mike Ludwig, Truthout |   Just in time for the holidays, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering changes to media cross-ownership rules that watchdogs say could good give Rupert Murdoch’s massive conglomerate News Corporation the go-ahead to acquire more big media outlets.

The proposal could also keep women and minorities out of the media market, according to civil rights groups.

Reports suggest Murdoch has recovered from the British phone hacking scandal and is ready to jump back into the media consolidation game. Both the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times are on the list of potential targets. Continue reading

Fukushima information website

http://fukushimaappeal.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/new-nuclear-regulation-agency-lined.htm We are Japanese people living in the UK. We are not activists or scientists, just normal citizens who want peace in the world and to protect our environment in a way that serves everybody. We are aware that there isn’t enough information in the main stream media in the UK about what’s going on in Fukushima, and we would like to share with you what we’ve found from Japanese web sites: information and news from scientists and doctors who are extremely worried about the safety of citizens, and from concerned freelance journalists and ordinary people. Since the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami, followed by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, we have been feeling a huge sense of loss… and have learned that nothing stays the same. Also we think that the Fukushima disaster was actually the result of many years of global political and economic corruption going on behind the scenes, and that the Japanese government was taken in by the worldwide drive for nuclear power, without learning the lessons of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings. (NB: English is not our native language, so please take this into account when reading this blog.)

Limiting information might help governments, but does not serve the public good

When disaster strikes, let information slip through the net Canberra Times September 20, 2012 Nigel Snoad, “…..Google’s search data show almost anywhere in the world, when a disaster strikes, people head online for information – warning alerts, recommended actions, evacuation routes, the state of essential utilities, social services, shelter and access to food.

Tragically, this information isn’t always there. This can be for a variety of reasons: sometimes the information simply isn’t online, or it is in a format that is hard to share on the internet or view on mobile. Official sources such as government websites can buckle under a surge in traffic…..

There’s almost no justification for authorities withholding information. At a recent
disaster-information conference in the Japanese city of Sendai, participants – from non government organisations to government agencies – unanimously agreed that limiting information does not help calm people.

That consensus followed criticism of authorities for sitting on the release of nuclear contamination data for more than month because it was considered “not reliable enough” for the public, yet good enough to share with international agencies.

In an information vacuum, social media such as Twitter registers problems minutes after they occur; the information is soon in the hands of people who need help, as well as in the hands of people who want to help. Our rule of thumb is that the more information is
shared, the better it gets. Limits on information cause anxiety…..

It’s cliche to say collaboration helps us survive a crisis. What that means today is that information isn’t worth anything unless people are taking that information, adapting it, consulting it and getting it to the people who need it.  http://www.canberratimes.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/when-disaster-strikes-let-information-slip-through-the-net-20120919-266wd.html#ixzz272XFqfzY

Japan’s government stops the “bad news” from Fukushima

July, 2011, Japan passes law to cleanse “bad” Fukushima news from internet http://www.huntingtonnews.net/6482 EDITED BY TONY RUTHERFORD FROM MULTIPLE REPORTS Japan has passed a new law to cleanse the internet of “bad” Fukushima news. In fact, Japan in this You Tube video tells citizens they have no right to live a radiation free life. . http://japanfocus.org/-Makiko-Segawa/3516

The following is a quote from “Fukushima Residents Seek Answers Amid Mixed Signals From Media, TEPCO and Government. Report from the Radiation Exclusion Zone (Updated May 16) Makiko SEGAWA in Fukushima, published byh Asia-Pacific Journal, Japan Focus.

“Now the Japanese government has moved to crack down on independent reportage and criticism of the government’s policies in the wake of the disaster by deciding what citizens may or may not talk about in public.

A new project team has been created by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, the National Police Agency, and METI to combat “rumors” deemed harmful to Japanese security in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.
The government charges that the damage caused by earthquakes and by the nuclear accident are being magnified by irresponsible rumors, and the government must take action for the sake of the public good. The project team has begun to send “letters of request” to such organizations as telephone companies, internet providers, cable television stations, and others, demanding that they “take adequate measures based on the guidelines in response to illegal information. ”The measures include erasing any information from internet sites that the authorities deem harmful to public order and morality.” Japan Focus…… http://nuclearhistory.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/28-july-2011-japan-passes-law-to-cleanse-bad-fukushima-news-from-internet/

A mainstream journalist sees hope for future of credible journalism

Read all about it: journalism has a future!, The Age, Katharine Murphy, September 3, 2012 If balance is a pillar of the new media then the truth will still win out.  ”….I find myself increasingly energised by the fantastic journalism I can now consume online from the best media outlets in the world. The digital bounty has changed my own news consumption habits fundamentally.
These days I hoover up blogs in London, New York and Washington, scour the American political website Politico (one of the great success stories of this period), admire the methodical journalism of ProPublica, watch live politics coverage on The Guardian and The New York Times, and use Twitter as a brilliant aggregator as well as a breaking news channel in its own right……

Modern journalism should be about providing clarity in the clamour. It should champion facts over what the American comedian Stephen Colbert has brilliantly termed ”truthiness” (a statement that feels or rings true, regardless of
the logic or evidence)…..
There’s been an interesting affirmation of core professional values over the past few days in the United States. I’ve been fascinated to watch a fact checking offensive unleashed by the US media covering the presidential campaign.

The trigger was an anti-Obama advertisement from the Romney campaign. This particular ad, a core element of the Republicans’ negative campaign, reportedly contained factual errors.
This problem was called out. The response from Team Romney was not an apology. It was defiance. Romney pollster Neil Newhouse reportedly declared: ”We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by the fact checkers.”...

How corporations manipulate the Internet

Russia’s natural resource oversight body to keep mum on catastrophes from now on Anna Kireeva, Charles Digges, 16/08-2012 […] Now, all information requests sent to Rosprirodnadzor’s press service will be subject to scouring by the special commission before it is released to the public  – a decision greeted by some of Kirillov‘s subordinates as anti-democratic and needlessly complex.

Rosprirodnadzor is one of the Russian government’s most important sources of information about environmental conditions in Russia

How to manipulate the Internet  by  1 September 12,  Below, are quotes from some articles that are looking at issues of internet blocking and manipulation of searches etc..

I live in the UK, and recently discovered that Uk government requests to access peoples personal data was much lower than other countries. This was because laws passed last year allow authorities to hack anyone of interest…..

they do not need to apply to the courts any more, they have to put them on the recently renamed DOMESTIC EXTREMIST DATABASE (DED) office. The DED now have no name so as to deter data protection requests from a concerned public. As you will see below, other countries also censure/manipulate data to suit local needs and some countries are more open than others..

I wanted to cover censorship and manipulation in Japan and the USA after the Gulf Oil Spill and Fukushima tragedy but the PR company (OGILVY and MATHER, WPP) that smoothed over the disasters would need its own article.

For now here are some examples of how the manipulation works.

Irradiated Russian region moves to manipulate its Internet image Charles Digges, 29/07-2011[…] Authorities in Chelyabinsk have announced that they will pay the equivalent of $13,000 in order to try to alter the region’s “online footprint” so that people looking for information on Chelyabinsk on the internet read “positive or neutral evaluations of the ecological situation” there. Murdoch news paints nuclear disasters as “not too bad, really”

Murdoch’s Journal pushes tragic Fukushima flim-flam  http://www.freepress.org/columns/display/7/2012/1941#.UD6F7tkjq2c.twitter  August 29, 2012 With every atomic reactor disaster comes the inevitable whitewash.

And Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal has just painted a tragic new coat over the radioactive wasteland of atomic flim-flam.  Its “Panic at Fukushima” speaks volumes to a nuclear power industry now crumbling at the core.  It fits an historic pattern:

When yet another radioactive leak emits from the local nuke—no matter how serious—the official response is hard-wired to include the phrase “no danger to the public.”

When serious structural cracks surface at reactors like Ohio’s Davis-Besse or Crystal River, Florida,  safety concerns are invariably dismissed with well-funded contempt.

As with fatally flawed steam generators at California’s San Onofre, if it can make an extra buck, the industry will run these reactors into the ground, safety-be-damned.  Protected by federal taxpayer insurance and the bankruptcy laws, they know even a catastrophic disaster need not trouble their bottom line.   Continue reading

Increasing citizen distrust of Japan’s corrupt “nuclear village”

Japan’s media controlled – not reporting deaths of nuclear evacuees

Complete Information Control”: Japan newspapers receive much frightening info that’s covered up — Some evacuees died from acute symptoms yet not reported — Journalists scared  http://enenews.com/complete-information-control-newspapers-receive-tons-frightening-information-covered-fukushima-journalist-frightened-govt-died-acute-symptoms-never-reported   August 16th, 2012  By ENENews  According to the news received yesterday, 6 evacuees out of 10 from a certain area of Namiecho who relocated themselves in Yonezawa died of acute symptoms (it was said leukemia), and that horrified the remaining evacuees. They presented this fact to the administration and medias, however, the media didn’t report it at all. They said they are scared of the government…

.. Local newspaper companies receive tons of frightening information, however, all are covered up. After the protest that took place in front of the PM’s residence, Tokyo Simbun expressed its regret to be not able to report it. Tokyo Simbun is a conscientious company. What are the other companies doing?..

.. Extracted from Mailing List of Fukushima Nuclear Disaster complainant. This document represents the actual situation of Fukushima. Majority are aware of the ongoing crisis. Complete information control is being carried out. My little brother is a local journalist of Fukushima, and he told me the government keeps a tight lid on information and it frightens him. Google Translation

?TV program “NEWSROOM” reveals truth about Fukushima event?

New Episode of HBO’s ‘Newsroom’ Centered on Fukushima Cover-up: “It’s a lot worse than they’re telling you” — Level 5 vs Level 7 is “the difference between life and gruesome death”  August 3rd, 2012   By ENENews   Title: The Newsroom
Source:  Salon.com
Author: Willa Paskin
Date: July 31, 2012
Sunday’s episode was set during the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear reactor. Sloan — who, like Munn, speaks fluent Japanese — learned from a spokesperson of the nuclear plant, off the record, that the problems with the reactor would likely be upgraded from a Three Mile Island-size disaster to a Chernobyl-size one. Filling in for an anchor on one of the prime-time news shows, Sloan, all fired up by a pep talk from Will McAvoy, manhandled and bullied her two guests, the spokesperson and his translator, repeatedly correcting the translator’s translations, eventually breaking into Japanese herself, and finally revealing the information she had gotten off the record without any on-air confirmation that this was actually true. Fukushima Film: It’s murder not allowing children to escape — It will be too late when we are the 2nd Chernobyl -Local Japanese Official (VIDEO)
Transcript Excerpt Surviving Japan (2012)  Filmmaker: Chris Noland

Minamisoma city council member Koichi Oyama: I would like to explain something historical to better your understanding. Japan used to be ruled by a king, the emperor…..
Parents and teacher tell children the best thing you can do was die for your country.
Kamikaze pilots in the war embodied this spirit.
In World War II they always told us we were winning every battle.
No one knew about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The same thing is happening now. The current government not telling people what is happening is the same we have had since World War II.
Keep your country alive by killing yourself.
I think the way to save the children at Fukushima is to get the world involved. If we don’t protect our children now, it will be too late when we are the second Chernobyl.
Not allowing the children to escape is murder.

Media’s strange silence on thyroid abnormalities in Fukushima children

We also spoke with Dr. Bryan Haugen, president-elect of the American Thyroid Association and head of endocrinology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, who hadn’t heard of the report before we contacted him.

Haugen agreed with the Caldicott’s assessment that it is surprising for kids to “have this many nodules and cysts seen, especially this soon after the accident,” and the fact that “this something that is not more widely known.”

The New York Academy of Sciences estimates that nearly one million people around the world have died from exposure to radiation released by the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl reactor.

CONFIRMED: 36 Percent Of Fukushima Kids Have Abnormal Thyroid Growths And Doctors Have Been Left In The Dark  http://www.businessinsider.com/fukushima-children-have-abnormal-thyroid-growths-2012-7#ixzz21CwegRH8   Michael Kelley | Jul. 19, 2012 A few days ago we reported that 36 percent of Fukushima children have abnormal thyroid growths likely from radiation exposure, based on the “Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey.”

We got in touch with Australian pediatrician Dr. Helen Caldicott, who has spoken about the growths, to ask her about the implications of the study.
After confirming the validity of the report, Caldicott reinforced the alarming nature of the findings:
1. “It is extremely rare to find cysts and thyroid nodules in children.”
2. “This is an extremely large number of abnormalities to find in children.”
3. “You would not expect abnormalities to appear so early — within the first year or so — therefore one can assume that they must have received a high dose of [radiation].”
4. “It is impossible to know, from what [officials in Japan] are saying, what these lesions are.”
Doctors worry about these abnormal growths because even though thyroid nodules are relatively common, they are not common in children and some of them could become cancerous. When asked why these results haven’t been widely reported, Calidcott noted that Japanese officials are not sharing ultrasound results with foremost experts of thyroid nodules in children and accused the media of “practicing psychic numbing,” saying that she doesn’t understand why media outlets are choosing to ignore the nuclear fallout.
