Diseconomics of Generation IV nuclear reactors -theme for April 19

First of all, dispel the nonsense that these expensive gimmicks will solve climate change. They can’t. And even if they could, they’d be deployed far too late to make any difference.

Generation IV nuclear reactors , Thorium Molten Salt Reactors (TMSRs) , Medium and Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (MSRs)   – have only one real use – to support the nuclear weapons industry – providing it with expertise, materials, technology development and media hoohah.

The nuclear salesmen promote other lies,  as well as the climate one.  There’s the lie about solving the waste problem, and the one about safety.

But the most compelling case against Generation IV nuclear reactors is that inevitable one – COST. There’s no market for these nuclear lobby toys – no chance of commercial biability. That’s mainly because , to have any hope, they would have to be ordered en masse. – and who’s going to invest in that risky idea?

Therefore – the only possible customers are governments. Which means YOU – your taxes.

In the meantime, rapid developments in energy efficiency, renewables, and battery storage offer a genuine opportunity for investors – and they are taking it up.

    ABSTRACT
    The effect of ionising radiation exposure on dementia is approached by applying the causation models of John Stuart Mill and of Sir Austin Bradford Hill to mechanism and epidemiological evidence. Since ionizing radiation is known to kill brain cells in laboratory culture and to affect hippocampal neurogenesis in animal experiments at modest doses, it is reasonable to assume that exposure to radiation must affect neurological integrity and hence dementia rates in those who are exposed. There is persuasive evidence from the epidemiological studies of a large cohort of female nuclear workers that ionising radiation exposure is associated with significant low dose region dose-dependent increases in rates of dementia. Using results from these studies, the Probability of Causation approach (PC), conventionally employed for assessing cancer risk following radiation exposure, is extended to dementia to find a risk coefficient for all ages of 60 per Sievert cumulative exposure over the range 0-100 mSv. The finding suggests that natural background external exposures to ionizing radiation are partly responsible for the development of dementia in human populations. A simple general model for dementia is proposed.

    1. IntroductionDiscussion of the health effects of ionising radiation (IR) has, until recently, focused on cancer and genetic damage as assessed largely through the concept of “absorbed dose” and rates of illness and congenital effects revealed by the Japanese Life Span Study (LSS) of the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. Indeed, the currently accepted cancer risk and genetic risk per unit dose applied by governments, following advice from radiation risk agencies like the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), is largely based on the LSS [1]. The conclusions and the safety of the LSS studies will be revisited here. However, it is increasingly clear that IR exposures cause heart disease, and a wide range of other conditions. Indeed, evidence has accumulated to the effect that IR has an impact on most organs and systems of the body through what can be broadly described as “premature ageing” [2]. One of the most-age related and serious conditions increasingly found in human populations is dementia. Dementia, is now the 4th leading cause of death in the USA, the leading component of dementia being Alzheimers disease [3]. There is now considerable evidence that exposure to ionizing radiation can lead to the development of Alzheimers disease and to dementia [4]. Evidence includes results from high dose radiation therapy for brain tumours [5] [6] [7] but also from low dose exposures from e.g. CAT scans and from studies of nuclear workers which will be discussed below. The issue of causation, and the risk of dementia from IR are approached here through a consideration of mechanism, laboratory and epidemiological evidence, using the philosophy of causation as presented by the classic work of Mill [8] and Bradford Hill [9].

  2. In response to the above comment, I continue to wonder if Kuru, and the related Mad Cow, CJD, and CWE for deer aren’t all caused by radioactive materials/fallout. That would account for the fact that a disease causing agent can’t be found and that it supposedly sneaks around the immune system. It explains many other oddities, too.
    Traditional CJD is like a fast moving Alzheimers.

    This was in response to an article posted on a study by Dr Busby linking radionuclides to dementia

    Six Pounts

    1. Problems of absorption of CJD Kuru and CWE proteina
    Kuru, CJD, and CWE are supposed to be linear proteins which are amino acids held togethe by peeptide bonds.
    Peptide bonds are very suscwptible to breaking by stomach acid and digestive enzyme. That is why insulin has to be injected.

    2. Large proteins like these prions, do not pass the blood-brain barrier easily. They are helical structures. They also contain polar disulfide bonds which do not allow them to pass lipophillic tissue or membranes easily.

    3. The mechanism of action of the prion proteins, is supposed to based on thier abilitity to make cells generate amyloid alzeimers-like plaques in the brain. Abnormal proteins are supposedly manufactured in cells, effected by prions. The abnormal proteins build up in between cells, to form amyloid plaque deposits, that cause dementia.

    There is not a clear mechansim of action whereby the prions regenerate themselve or, force cell nuclei to generate the aforementioned plaques.

    4. Strong radionuclides like Cesium 137 act like electrolytes found in brain tissue and are easily accessible to the brain.
    Cesium 137 acts like potassium. It is easily accessible to brain tissue.

    Cesium 137 would damage and dna and disrupt protein sythesis in cells. it would do so, by damaging RNA. This would disrupt protein sythesis and cause abnormal amyloid protein synthesis. Much more plausible than the prion theory.
    Strong salt like radionuclides, would also effect the hydrogen bonding, essential for proper protein synthesis and transport in cells.

    The same could be said for Strontium 90, which would also have high affinity for nerve tissue
    like cesium 137. These highly potent gamma and beta emitter would also cause cell-death.

    Plutonium is mistaken for iron, by the body. It is found in neural tissue.
    Plutonium and transuranics are strong alpha emitters.

    Plutonium’s actions actions would be more insidious .
    Plutonium and other heavy metal-like, radionuclides could do mulitiple damage to nerve cell tissue and glial cell tissue in the brain.

    The damage from Plutonium, includes the generation of amyloid plaques, that would contribute to alzeimers dementias and other dementias from cell death.
    it would get stuck in glial cells, lipose tissue, and nerve tissue.

    Plutonium would constantly degrade dna and rna process in the brain and kills brain cells as Dr. Busby, alludes to in his paper on radionuclides and demential. It would sevelerly damage hippocampal tissue, where new brains cells are made, as Dr Busby says.

    Radionuclides like tritium and carbon-14 would have easy acces to brain tissue, to create destructive environments in nerve and glial cells. They would also bombard rna and effect protein synthesis.

    5. There was a great deal of Nuclear Bomb testing in the south pacific before the Kuru was suppisedly discovered. There could also be a comorbidity where the radionuclides enhanced the toxicity or actually are responsible for the appearance of prion like plaques in the brain.

    6. The CWE and CJD have appeared well into the nuclear age with the glut of radionuclide pollution and fallout that began with uranium mining , open air testing, nuclear reactor pollution, nuclear reactor meltdowns and nuclear waste accumulation.
