President Zuma still wants a major expansion of nuclear power, despite its unaffordability

South Africa considering best time for nuclear power expansion: Zuma http://www.reuters.com/article/us-safrica-nuclear/south-africa-considering-best-time-for-nuclear-power-expansion-zuma-idUSKBN1D21W6?il=0, Reuters Staff, 2 Nov 17, CAPE TOWN (Reuters) – South African President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday his government was considering the best time to launch a major expansion of its nuclear power fleet, after the finance minister said the country could not afford it.

Zuma was responding to a question in parliament by opposition leader Mmusi Maimane who asked why finance minister Malusi Gigaba had said the expansion would be delayed while energy minister David Mahlobo said the opposite.

“We have a policy of mixed energy and that includes nuclear,” Zuma said. “We are not saying we have changed policy … Its a question of timing, when do we do it. We have been discussing that issue all the time in the government.”

  1. Hi this issue of nuclear in our country its no longer about building one, but its about feeding some peoples pocket with money and killing the nation. I so wish there was a way to play the fukushima tape to all the people specially to the grass roots community base organizations and their communities, in order for them to understand and see why we keep on saying No to Nukes/Nuclear. Nuclear is a false fossil solution, it creates no jobs, its expensive to build and for duration of thirty years life spend our electricity will be ruled by Russians. Imagine if we cant pay back the bill of the plant what will happen to us and our beautiful country?

I say they must scrub the nuclear energy from our energy mix and from the cop23,Cause it will leave our country bankrupt and poverty will be 100percent in SA. Lastly I second the minister of finance when he said I quote “the country doesn’t have money for the building of nuclear and its programs.” Let our president and his scheme understand that its not all about them but its within all south African citizens rights as our beautiful constitution says we have a right to clean energy and health.

    LOVE SOUTH AFRICA
