I came across one or two proposals over the last few weeks for mega sized pumped storage facilities in Scotland to back up intermittent renewables (such as wind), which I thought it would be worth commenting on.

The first proposal involves taking Loch Morar, a freshwater loch 300m deep, but one just a few hundred metres from the shores of Loch Nevis (salt water). The plan would be to build a dam 280m high across a narrow pass to the North, which would allow an upper reservoir to be created 300m high. ¶ A post-2020 climate-control action plan, to be submitted by China to the United Nations by the end of this month, will be a powerful driving force on energy research and innovation, according to the head of the International Renewable Energy Agency. It will see investments estimated to total $6.6 trillion. [ecns]

¶ In her first major policy announcement since taking office five weeks ago, Alberta’s Environment and Parks Minister announced that Alberta’s primary greenhouse gas regulation will be renewed and updated. ¶ An energy storage technology company, BioSolar, has claimed a breakthrough in the field of lithium-ion batteries. In a press release, the company said a technology that it is developing can significantly expand the life, increase the energy capacity, and lower the costs associated with lithium-ion batteries.
