We are now OFFICIALLY & LEGALLY known as MURUROA NUCLEAR VETERANS GROUP Inc
Welcome to the “OFFICIAL
“Mururoa Nuclear Veterans Group Incorporated”
In 1973, the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Norman Kirk, determined that the French Government where disregarding the World Court by continuing to test Nuclear Devices in the Pacific, namely at Mururoa Atoll (also pronounced Moruroa Atoll).
Mr Kirk sent a Government Representative the right honourable Fraser Colman, aboard the frigate HMNZS Otago, followed by the frigate HMNZS Canterbury to promote world opinion against nuclear testing.
STANDING ON THE DECK OF OTAGO, PRIME MINISTER KIRK PROMISED TO PROVIDE THE FULL RESOURCES OF NEW ZEALAND TO ENSURE THE SHIPS COMPANY WOULD BE LOOKED AFTER SHOULD THERE BE ISSUES AFTER RETURNING TO NEW ZEALAND.
UNFORTUNATELY THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED “UNLESS” THE INDIVIDUAL FITS INTO ONE OF THE CATEGORIES LISTED IN THEIR CREATED “PRESUMPTIVE LIST” . THE VIEW IS THAT THIS LIST NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED AND TO DATE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED, DESPITE REQUESTS TO THE MINISTER OF THE DAY IN CHARGE OF THE SAME.
This site is intended to keep the Families & Crew members of HMNZS Otago ,HMNZS Canterbury ,HMAS Supply that were on the “tour of duty” at MURUROA ATOLL in June, July and August 1973, along with the news media personnel, the Government representative (R.I.P.), and a representative from the National Laboratory, informed of medical and other developments that have transpired and affected NOT ONLY the personnel aboard these ships BUT also the Generations that have followed…. OUR CHILDREN & GRAND CHILDREN..
We welcome any support, donations or sponsorship. For further information please contact our Media Liaise Officer and Webmaster, Bruce Gordon.
