Nuclear Regulatory Commission, April 3, 2013: At 1707 CDT on 4/2/13 an arc flash occurred at the ‘B’ safeguards transformer (XMDV24) in the plant switchyard at Callaway [nuclear plant in Missouri]. At the time of the flash, ground straps were being placed on the ‘B’ safeguards transformer which had been removed from service for maintenance. The event resulted in a loss of power to areas/buildings outside the power block. There was no impact to equipment and systems in the plant. Four workers were injured or affected by the flash. The extent of the electrical-related injuries has not been determined. However, based on reports from the scene, all of the workers were conscious and walked away from the scene. One person was transported by helicopter and two by ambulance to a local hospital. […]
KMIZ: Emergency officials confirm an electrical explosion happened around 5:30 p.m., but the cause is still under investigation. Ameren Missouri said in a written statement that the accident occurred in the switch yard area, but a company spokesman declined to elaborate about what happened. […] South Callaway Fire, Callaway Ambulance and the plant’s emergency staff responded to the explosion.
KOLR: The company did not provide any details about the nature of the accident or identify the injured workers. But one television report said reported the accident was an electrical explosion and that one of the employees was flown to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment.
KMOV: The company declined to elaborate about what happened. But Callaway County Emergency Management Director Michelle Kidwell said the 911 call reported burn victims, including two with burns to the face. Kidwell said a medical helicopter crew was among the emergency responders dispatched to the nuclear facility located about 25 miles northeast of Jefferson City.

“Background Radiation” – a favourite lie of the nuclear lobby
Fake Science Alert: Fukushima Radiation Can’t Be Compared to Bananas or X-Rays,Zero Hedge, April 2013
“…….Most “Background Radiation” Didn’t Exist Before Nuclear Weapons Testing and Nuclear Reactors
Nuclear apologists also pretend that we get a higher exposure from background radiation (when we fly, for example) and or x-rays then we get from nuclear accidents.
In fact, there was exactly zero background radioactive cesium or iodine before above-ground nuclear testing and nuclear accidents started.
Wikipedia provides some details on the distribution of cesium-137 due to human activities:
Small amounts of caesium-134 and caesium-137 were released into the environment during nearly all nuclear weapon tests and some nuclear accidents, most notably the Chernobyl disaster.Caesium-137 is unique in that it is totally anthropogenic. Unlike most other radioisotopes, caesium-137 is not produced from its non-radioactive isotope, but from uranium. It did not occur in nature before nuclear weapons testing began. By observing the characteristic gamma rays emitted by this isotope, it is possible to determine whether the contents of a given sealed container were made before or after the advent of atomic bomb explosions. This procedure has been used by researchers to check the authenticity of certain rare wines, most notably the purported “Jefferson bottles”.
As the EPA notes:
Cesium-133 is the only naturally occurring isotope and is non-radioactive; all other isotopes, including cesium-137, are produced by human activity.
Similarly, iodine-131 is not a naturally occurring isotope. As the Encyclopedia Britannica notes: (Fukushima has spewed much more radioactive cesium and iodine than Chernobyl. The amount of radioactive cesium released by Fukushima was some 20-30 times higher than initially admitted. Japanese experts say that Fukushima is currently releasing up to 93 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium into the ocean each day. And the cesium levels hitting the west coast of North America will keep increasing for several years. Fukushima is still spewing radiation into the environment, and the amount of radioactive fuel at Fukushima dwarfs Chernobyl.)
As such, the concept of “background radiation” is largely a misnomer. Most of the radiation we encounter today – especially the most dangerous types – did not even exist in nature before we started tinkering with nuclear weapons and reactors. In a sense, we are all guinea pigs ……. http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2013-04-01/fake-science-alert-fukushima-radiation-can%E2%80%99t-be-compared-bananas-or-x-rays
Fukushima radiation into ocean: is it killing sea lions?
Unfortunately, the nuclear accident is nowhere near contained. Japanese experts say that Fukushima is currently releasing up to 93 billion becquerels of radioactive cesium into the ocean each day, the reactors have lost containment, and groundwater is flooding into the stricken reactors(delaying clean-up).
And things may get worse for California, instead of better .
Is Fukushima Radiation Causing the Epidemic of Dead and Starving Sea Lions In California? http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2013-03-31/fukushima-radiation-causing-epidemic-dead-and-starving-sea-lions-california by George Washington on 03/31/2013 Associated Press reports:
At island rookeries off the Southern California coast, 45 percent of the pups born in June have died, said Sharon Melin, a wildlife biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service based in Seattle. Normally, less than one-third of the pups would die. It’s gotten so bad in the past two weeks that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event.” That will allow more scientists to join the search for the cause, Melin said. Gallup poll shows Americans want solar and wind power
Survey Says: Americans Want More Solar And Wind
Power, by Energy Matters 3 April 13 As the USA seeks to consolidate its domestic energy industry, a nation-wide poll has revealed two-thirds of Americans support solar and wind power over oil and nuclear energy.
Production of coal proved least popular, with just one in three people surveyed supporting it as the primary solution to future energy independence.
The Gallup poll asked respondents to categorise the emphasis they believe should be placed on a range of domestic energy production sources.
The poll found an overwhelming 76 percent of all Americans wanted more emphasis placed on producing domestic energy using solar power, followed closely by wind energy (71 percent), then natural gas (65 percent), oil (46 percent), nuclear (37 percent), and coal (31 percent)…. http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=3669

Calming information about North Korea’s nuclear weapons
US acts to calm fears over North Korea’s ‘alarming’ nuclear plan Country announces plans to restart facilities at Yongbyon complex as Pentagon denies report of warships off South’s coast Ewen MacAskill in Washington and Justin McCurry in Seoul The Guardian, Tuesday 2 April 2013
North Korea said it would re-activate all facilities at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex to ease its electricity shortage and strengthen its nuclear capability. The reactor was shut down in 2007 as part of international nuclear disarmament talks that have since stalled.
The move came a day after Pyongyang announced a “new strategic line” focusing on its nuclear programme and economy.
But the Obama administration, trying to reduce tension, stressed that it would take time between Tuesday’s announcement heralding resumption of North Korea’s nuclear programme and the North’s ability to restore its nuclear programme. Analysts estimated it would take about a year.
The North Korea move marked a further escalation in a confrontation in which tensions rise almost on a daily basis….. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/02/us-north-korea-nuclear-plan

No more leaks, lies, lawyers – Vermont anti nuclear protest
Hundreds march against Yankee nuclear plant
Rutland Herald, By Susan Smallheer Staff Writer | March 31,2013 Brattleboro More than 500 people marched along Main Street in Brattleboro on Saturday, carrying banners and pledging to end what they claimed was a year of illegal operation of the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant by Entergy Nuclear.
The exuberant gathering, bolstered by Vermont’s famous Bread and Puppet Theater, chanted “shut it down, Vermont Yankee, shut it down, now” along the length of Main Street.
Several people from the street joined the parade, which occurred in the late afternoon on a sunny early-spring day.
“We’re here to mark one year of Entergy operating illegally,” said organizer Chad Simmons of the SAGE Alliance. “We’re not going to let them operate any longer.”…. Anti-nuclear groups have been stymied in the past year, as Entergy continued to operate, even without the state’s required certificate of public good. Hearings before the Public Service Board are currently pending. Continue reading
