Wise owl will guide medical professionals on ionising radiation

New Campaign Seeks To Reduce Radiation From CT Scans, (RTTNews) 10 Dec 10,  – A new campaign to limit exposure to radiation from CT scans has been launched by the medical community. The Image Wisely campaign will feature signs with its icon, the owl, asking medical professionals to use radiation wisely. It echoes a similar initiative to reduce children’s exposure to radiation through medical tests.
The new campaign seeks to ensure that doctors “use the right procedure at the right dose for the right patient,” said William R. Hendee, PhD, distinguished professor of radiology, radiation oncology, biophysics, and bioethics at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

The panel responsible for the campaign noted that a seven-fold increase in radiation-based imaging in the last 25 years has been linked to a 0.05 percent increased risk of cancer, which, though small at the individual level, proves a public health threat on a larger scale.
