The Liberal Democrat suggested that a decision on whether to replace Trident should be delayed until after the next election – potentially leaving the issue in Labour’s lap.

He also raised the prospect that the nuclear system might never be recommissioned if the Lib Dems force the coalition into a delay.

Mr Harvey later received the backing of his leader Nick Clegg, who did not deny that any decision could be delayed until after 2015.
