Delhi University teachers demand action on radiation scandal

Exposure to radioactive Cobalt-60 in the scrap market in Mayapuri in West Delhi had led to the death of one person and injuries to ten others in Delhi in April this year. The material landed there after an auction of some items from the DU chemistry lab.

VC Subverting Radiation Exposure Probe: DU Teachers, news.outlookindia.com , 16 Sept 10, The association of Delhi University teachers today accused Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental of trying to subvert an inquiry into the disposal of radioactive material by the institution and demanded that he be arrested to make way for an “unbiased” probe.

The DUTA executive discussed the issue of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board withdrawing permission to DU to use any radioactive source in its labs, and said the President of India as Visitor and HRD Ministry should intervene to prevent Pental from “inflicting further harm to the University”.
The AERB withdrew the permission given to DU to use any radioactive source in its labs as it failed to submit its final reply on the radiation exposure incident at Mayapuri scrap yard in the city within stipulated period.
“The DUTA demands that Prof Deepak Pental should be immediately arrested in order to carry out an unbiased inquiry… The Vice-Chancellor and other authorities have consistently tried to derail any worthwhile public inquiry into this incredible sale and has tried to subvert its own inquiry,” it said in a statement.

It also demanded that the HRD Ministry should take action in the matter of Pental’s continuance in the office even after the expiry of his term on August 31.
