UK’s Ministry of Defence stalling on compensation, as nuclear veterans die
A veteran of the nuclear bomb tests in the South Pacific today told how he fears he may not live long enough to see the Government apologise for sending them there. SGClub.com Friendly Singapore Forums, 11 Sept 10, Kieran Boomer, 74, is one of hundreds of veterans of the tests on Christmas Island in the 1950s fighting for an apology and compensation. Like many other veterans, Mr Boomer has suffered ill-health throughout his life, including cancer in his hand and a lung disease which makes it difficult for him to breathe….
Earlier this year a senior judge gave permission for test cases against the Ministry of Defence to go ahead at the High Court. But the MOD has appealed and that appeal will not be heard until October, delaying the whole process massively.
It comes despite Russia, the USA, China and others compensating their nuclear veterans…..
my children and grandchildren have got a claim.“We are dismayed the MOD has appealed. The Russians have admitted what the British won’t admit, which is that they were put in as guinea pigs.
“For the Russians to admit they are wrong and this Government not to admit anything is disgusting.
“I think they are waiting for us to die off.
……“Every nuclear power, including Russia, China and France is now compensating its atomic veterans. The UK Government will sooner or later have to follow suit. It should hang its head in shame for allowing the MoD to employ these delaying tactics while hardly a week goes by without another nuclear veteran passing away.”
