Christina anti-nuclear activists face gaol in UK
these men and women of the faith know something most of the world has forgotten: that nuclear weapons are as menacing as ever to all God’s creatures, great and small.
Aging Plowshares Anti-Nuke Activists Face Years in Prison | TakePart, Adam Trunell, 10 sept 10, – “…….This past week in England, a priest and two activists were arrested after they cut through a perimeter fence at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Berkshire, then knelt and prayed on the restricted grounds. Ranging in age from 43 to 63 years old, the protestors were indicted and charged as the Plowshares Movement observes its 30th year of nonviolent activism against the world’s most dangerous weapon. The collective agitators, gray and inspired by a bygone era, carry an issue in mind that seems almost old-fashioned and hokey in this day and age…
But these men and women of the faith know something most of the world has forgotten: that nuclear weapons are as menacing as ever to all God’s creatures, great and small.
Pretending these weapons don’t exist only makes them more dangerous.
The specter of a nuclear holocaust was used as a propaganda tool on both sides of the Cold War. Public awareness of the bomb has slowly diminished since the collapse of the Soviet Union, replaced by new and exotic threats of shoe and underwear bombers……
For them, nuclear weapons remain the greatest threat facing our planet.
Across the world, nearly 100 Plowshares protests have made news since September 9, 1980, with many ending in long prison sentences for their participants.
This week’s eight Swords-to-Plowsharers broke the law—there’s no denying that—but there’s something unsettling about the image of aging activists holding firm on a fading issue.
What’s it say when the grandparent demographic—a group that has lived in the shadow of a mushroom cloud since its very own springtide—remains the most outspoken population segment against the bomb?
