Chewonki meeting – stop nuclear power development until waste problem solved

If there could be said to be a consensus that emerged from the public comments that were made at Chewonki, it was that Congress should and must forbid any further development of nuclear power unless or until this intractable problem has been resolved.

Not at any price, The Times Record, Mid-Coast Maine, Betty King, August 20, 2010, “…..the meeting at Chewonki with the President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on the Storage and Transportation of Nuclear Waste……While it is true that the people of Nevada hate the idea, there were also solid scientific reasons for abandoning the site. The controversy caused the study period to be prolonged enough to reveal that the site was not nearly as stable as had been hoped. Geological evidence was uncovered that showed the site had been penetrated by water in the past, and presumably this water penetration could occur again sometime in the future during the 10,000-year period during which the radioactive material would need to be protected.
In any case, the Yucca Mountain site would have been too small to hold all the reactor waste that is sitting around above-ground right now — never mind more!…..
