Commission on America’s Nuclear Future co-chairman Brent Scowcroft says the future of American nuclear energy depends on whether the U.S. can figure out how to treat and dispose of the resulting waste.

(AP) – A commission charged with reviewing U.S. nuclear waste policies has spent two days touring Washington state’s Hanford nuclear reservation – the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site.

Commission on America’s Nuclear Future co-chairman Brent Scowcroft says the future of American nuclear energy depends on whether the U.S. can figure out how to treat and dispose of the resulting waste.

The panel was created by President Barack Obama after he moved to kill Nevada’s proposed Yucca Mountain repository, a decision facing legal challenges from Washington and South Carolina.Scowcroft says he understands that those who live near the Hanford site “have deep concerns about a permanent repository.”
