Uranium mining ‘rush” could be a ‘crash’ for Africa
Uranium ‘Rush’ Or ‘Crush’ for Erongo?, allAfrica.com: Adam Hartman 11 May 2010 “…………there are also elements that could turn this positive outlook into a uranium ‘crush’, with serious social, economic and environmental implications. One element is government’s non consideration to re-invest uranium revenue back into the environment and communities effected by the rush. Another element is an unforeseen event that destabilises uranium prices and the global uranium market, resulting in mines ‘turning off the lights and walking away’.
These were some of the points discussed at a recent public meeting in Swakopmund where the ‘Uranium Rush’ Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) was presented. The SEA is being done by the Southern African Institute for Environmental Assessment (SAIEA) on behalf of the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the final report is expected to be out soon…………..
A worst case scenario is the ‘boom or bust’ scenario. Unforeseen events could destabilize the global uranium market, forcing mines to stop operations altogether, and not even being able to rehabilitate.
