Younger patients more at risk from radiation caused cancer
Radiation Risks Nearly Double for Younger CT Scan Patients, Doctors should consider age when evaluating risks, study suggests. Bloomberg Business Week,May 3 (HealthDay News) –– Radiation risks associated with abdominal and pelvic CT scans are twice as high for younger patients as older patients, a new study finds.”Estimating the risks associated with ionizing radiation is complex,” study author Dr. James Koonce, of the Medical University of South Carolina, said in a news release. “Many variables such as patient size, age, and the region of the body being imaged all affect the total risk. Our study looked at how the overall risks associated with abdominal/pelvic CT scans depend on patient sex and age.”
CT scans as a cause of cancer
Avoiding cancer, The Star, By Dr ALBERT LIM KOK HOOI, 9 May 2010, “..Radiation doses from common CT procedures are higher and more variable than previously thought…….In the first article, researchers found out that radiation doses from common CT procedures are higher (about 66%) and more variable than previously thought. Radiation is a known cause of cancer. In the second study, researchers estimated future cancer risk from current CT use in the United States and projected that 29,000 future cancers will be directly attributable to CT scans that were performed in 2007 alone. It is expected that the majority of these projected cancers will be caused by scans of the abdomen and pelvis (n = 14,000), chest (n = 4,100) and head (n = 4,000) and by CT angiography (n = 2,700)…….
The irony of it all is that 80% of our population are having their cancer diagnosed late and inadequately treated. The other 20% are overserviced whether by overtreatment or unnecessary CT scans. Avoiding cancer

Europeans want NATO’s dangerous old nuclear weapons OUT!
how safe and secure they are. For one thing, al-Qaida terrorists have already targeted this Belgian air base, 84km northeast of Brussels.
US nuclear garbage « Niqnaq Outdated, unwanted, US nukes hang on in Europe Charles J Hanley, AP, May 9 2010 Unseen beyond the grazing Holsteins and rolling pastures of Kleine Brogel, eastern Belgium, the 12ft-long tapered metal cylinders sit in their underground vaults, waiting for the doomsday call that never came. Each packs the power of many Hiroshimas. Continue reading
Cancer from nuclear radiation: references in President’s Cancer Panel report
President’s Cancer Panel report, Frank Munger, 9 May 2010, Oak Ridge is mentioned at least three times in the President’s Cancer Panel report, “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk — What We Can Do Now.” I haven’t had a chance to read the report yet but a couple of folks have sent me copies. When I return to the office (been gone for a few days) and get my mailbox unclogged, I’ll post it here. There are references to earlier studies of nuclear fallout and iodine-131 exposures, including those in Oak Ridge, and also higher rates of multiple myeloma among construction workers at nuclear weapons sites.

France pretty desperate to sell nuclear technology overseas
France needs to win international contracts, given that there will be little growth at home
French report hopes to heal nuclear division By Peggy Hollinger, FT.com : May 9 2010 “…..And, just maybe, it will help to end the years of public bickering and rivalry that have divided France’s nuclear champions – Areva, EDF, 36 per cent state-owned GDF-Suez and the Atomic Energy Commission – and which threaten to damage the industry’s international competitiveness………..The report is expected to call for greater government involvement in identifying the markets it wants its nuclear companies to target……….The organisation will aim to ensure France’s political interests are served by its state-owned companies, and to provide the political and commercial resources to identify new markets and give French technology a head start……..France needs to win international contracts, given that there will be little growth at home

Renewable energy can be used to build more renewable energy
Renewable Breeders (environmentalresearchweb blog), 10 May, 2010, “……………….we will have to replace the existing fossil plants anyway in the years ahead, as they get old and are retired. Moreover, the energy (and carbon) debt from replacing the existing system with renewables should be less that either building more fossil plants, or even than going nuclear e.g. the embedded energy content of wind turbines is low- typically you get around 80 times more energy out over their lifetimes operation than is needed for their construction.
By comparison, according a 2002 Hydro Quebec study, the output from nuclear plants over their lifetime is only around 16 times the energy needed for their construction and for the (energy intensive) production/processing of their fuel…….. Continue reading
