Links between a nuclear waste dump and Perry Statesman.com, By Asher Price | Thursday, April 29, 2010 Salsa Verde We’ve written at the Statesman about links between Waste Control Specialists and Gov. Rick Perry. Waste Control, which operates a radioactive waste dump in far West Texas, is owned by Harold Simmons, who is one of the chief donors to Perry.
Waste Control now accepts trainloads of PCB waste from New York’s Hudson River. On May 11 the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission will meet to decide whether Texas should accept radioactive waste from other states. A lot of money is at stake — radioactive waste from hospitals, for example, could be worth billions in the long run.
Texans for Public Justice fleshes out the links in a report today: Simmons has donated $620,000 to Governor Perry’s campaign efforts since 2001. In 2006, Waste Control investor Kent Hance gave $150,000 before becoming Texas Tech’s chancellor in 2006, according to the report. The commission is made up members of Vermont and Texas — originally it was set up to shepherd Vermont’s waste to Texas — and Perry’s appointees outnumber Vermont’s by six to two.
