Uranium miners might be forced to clean up radioactive wastes

Senate gives initial backing to uranium bill, Washington Examiner, Associated Press0 4/27/10 DENVER — The state Senate has given initial backing to requiring uranium mines and mills to clean up nuclear waste before accepting more radioactive material.The Senate backed the bill in a voice vote Tuesday. A final vote could come Wednesday.Lawmakers worry a new national focus on nuclear energy will allow mines to postpone cleanup of radioactive wastes while they ramp up production. Currently, mines and mills are allowed to postpone cleanup until they finish production and decommission their production facilities.The Cotter Corp. says the bill would force the closure of its mill in Canon City. It’s been listed as an EPA Superfund site since 1984 and some residents say they’ve suffered medical problems because of contaminated water.
