Bill Announced To Crack Down On Uranium Mills NEWSCHANNEL 13 by Sean Hauser Jan 27, 2010 FREMONT COUNTY – A major bill was announced in Canon City Tuesday to deliver a message to Uranium Mills in Colorado that enough is enough.

The bill is called the Uranium Processing Accountability Act.  If passed, it will put pressure on uranium mills like the one in Canon City owned by Cotter to clean up their act.  Something many citizens and state officials say they’ve failed to do for years.

It’s common sense, if you make a mess you should clean it up,” said Sharyn Cunningham, a member of the group called Citizens Against Toxic Waste (CCAT).

Fremont County officials say the bill is well past due.  It would require uranium mills in Colorado to clean up, and comply with regulations before proceeding with operations.  It would also ensure that the clean up wouldn’t be done at your expense.

“Taxpayers have given a one billion dollar bailout to uranium companies to clean up past mill sites, just in the state of Colorado,” said Matt Garrington, with Environment Colorado.

The bill will also help protect people living in Fremont County. ……….

The bill will be introduced to the house in early February.  The group says it already has bi-partisan support.
