Renewables a better energy prospect that nuclear for UK
Call for NPS to prioritise renewables over nuclear New Energy Focus (UK) 10 Nov 09 Opposition politicians and campaign groups have called on the government to prioritise renewable energy ahead of developing nuclear plants after it unveiled plans to fast-track planning applications for as many as 10 new nuclear facilities. “………………planning applications for new nuclear projects at 10 sites are set to be fast-tracked under changes that the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said “will remove unnecessary planning delays facing large energy proposals.”
However, following the announcement, Liberal Democrat shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary Simon Hughes said renewables should be promoted ahead of new nuclear.
He said: “New nuclear is a reckless strategy for Britain’s energy needs as it won’t be ready for many years and could only make a small contribution to Britain’s demands.”
“The best way for Britain to reduce emissions and secure its energy supply is through the rapid development of renewable power which is clean, safe, effective and would create huge numbers of jobs,” he added.
The Scottish National Party’s (SNP) Westminster Energy spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, rejected the need for new nuclear in Scotland and said that Britain should be following Scotland’s lead by making more use of its renewable resources.
