No more nukes until waste problem solved
Editorial: Solve the nuclear storage issue first
HRT News 1 Oct 09“……………….Wisconsin in 1983 banned construction of new nuclear plants, in large part because there is no national or international site to permanently dispose of the waste they would generate. That’s still the case 26 years later and it’s the reason we remain concerned with proposals to lift the moratorium on nuclear plant construction………………
The problem lies in what we do — or don’t do — with spent, highly radioactive nuclear fuel. The nation has been dealing with this problem since the first nuclear power plantin the United States went into operation in 1957. Coupled with the high cost of nuclear plant permitting and construction, it’s the reason no new reactors have been ordered in this country since 1978.The Energy Department’s nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev., remains awash in regulatory red tape and lawsuits. There are other proposals to reuse spent nuclear fuel, to store it under the seas or even to shoot it into space………………
We can re-examine all energy options — including nuclear — when there is a solution to this ongoing problem.
