The Radiation Regulatory Agency has been placed under heightened monitoring by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission because of the state’s budget constraints, and it may lose its federal certification
if a grant worth $500,000 is not reinstated. Without certification, the U.S. government will take over the agency, resulting in increased license fees for radioactive-material users and no say for Arizona on decisions involving disposal sites for low-level nuclear waste.
