Fallujah, Iraq – Contamination from Depleted Uranium (DU) munitions and other military-related pollution is suspected of causing a sharp rises in congenital birth defects, cancer cases, and other illnesses throughout much of Iraq.

Many prominent doctors and scientists contend that DU contamination is also connected to the recent emergence of diseases that were not previously seen in Iraq, such as new illnesses in the kidney, lungs, and liver, as well as total immune system collapse. DU contamination may also be connected to the steep rise in leukaemia, renal, and anaemia cases, especially among children, being reported throughout many Iraqi governorates.

There has also been a dramatic jump in miscarriages and premature births among Iraqi women, particularly in areas where heavy US military operations occurred, such as Fallujah.

Official Iraqi government statistics show that, prior to the outbreak of the First Gulf War in 1991, the rate of cancer cases in Iraq was 40 out of 100,000 people. By 1995, it had increased to 800 out of 100,000 people, and, by 2005, it had doubled to at least 1,600 out of 100,000 people. Current estimates show the increasing trend continuing.

As shocking as these statistics are, due to a lack of adequate documentation, research, and reporting of cases, the actual rate of cancer and other diseases is likely to be much higher than even these figures suggest. “Cancer statistics are hard to come by, since only 50 per cent of the healthcare in Iraq is public,” Dr Salah Haddad of the Iraqi Society for Health Administration and Promotion told Al Jazeera. “The other half of our healthcare is provided by the private sector, and that sector is deficient in their reporting of statistics. Hence, all of our statistics in Iraq must be multiplied by two. Any official numbers are likely only half of the real number.”

Toxic environments

Dr Haddad believes there is a direct correlation between increasing cancer rates and the amount of bombings carried out by US forces in particular areas.

“My colleagues and I have all noticed an increase in Fallujah of congenital malformations, sterility, and infertility,” he said. “In Fallujah, we have the problem of toxics introduced by American bombardments and the weapons they used, like DU.”

During 2004, the US military carried out two massive military sieges of the city of Fallujah, using large quantities of DU ammunition, as well as white phosphorous.

“We are concerned about the future of our children being exposed to radiation and other toxic materials the US military have introduced into our environment,” Dr Haddad added.

A frequently cited epidemiological study titled Cancer, Infant Mortality and Birth Sex-Ratio in Fallujah, Iraq 2005-2009involved a door-to-door survey of more than 700 Fallujah households.

The research team interviewed Fallujans about abnormally high rates of cancer and birth defects. One of the authors of the study, Chemist Chris Busby, said that the Fallujah health crisis represented “the highest rate of genetic damage in any population ever studied”.

Dr Mozghan Savabieasfahani is an environmental toxicologist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is the author of more than two dozen peer reviewed articles, most of which deal with the health impact of toxicants and war pollutants. Her research now focuses on war pollution and the rising epidemic of birth defects in Iraqi cities.

“After bombardment, the targeted population will often remain in the ruins of their contaminated homes, or in buildings where metal exposure will continue,” Dr Savabieasfahani told Al Jazeera.

“Our research in Fallujah indicated that the majority of families returned to their bombarded homes and lived there, or otherwise rebuilt on top of the contaminated rubble of their old homes. When possible, they also used building materials that were salvaged from the bombarded sites. Such common practices will contribute to the public’s continuous exposure to toxic metals years after the bombardment of their area has ended.”

Homelessness, is becoming a symptom of people falling chronically ill and acutely ill . The illness is from the poisoning of this country with radionucllide hellfire and chemical death. The enormous amounts of plastics.

I know a primary care physician . His immediate family is gone from , illness and cancer. He is homeless. Same thing for a psychiatrist and engineer. About half or more homeless now are there, from medical bankrupsy in murica. There are many, that are victims of environmental induced illness . Things like diabetes, cancer heart disease, heritable schizophrenia and autism in people. Young people and older People, who can barely take care of themselves. Their numbers are doubling and qudrupeling in the megacities and countryside of murica.

Fragile X victims have both Autism and schizophrenia. It is a trisomy like downs sydrome. It can be radiation induced like downs sydrome.

Affordable housing for the middle class, working class, and poor is all but gone. Gone 11 years after the banksters destroyed housing markets. Gone since wall street monopolists and foreigeners have taken advantage of it the housing crisis.

There are millions of climate change refugees from wildfires, floods and hurricanes.

This time is not like the time nazi germany or fascist stalinist russia.

There is plenty of radioactive and chemically poisoned, food and water for everyone. There is an artificially induced shelter shortage.

Chronically ill end up in the streets. There are millions in cars, tent cities, squatting, eeking it out in the outskirts but, nonethless sick from the poisons.

The megacities that have evolved in this radioactive-chemical-sewer, human wasteland, into polluted sprwls with massive landgfulls that are running out of space.
They have air that is barely breathable, from toxic-chemical, heavy metal and radionuclide microparticles. The megacities are approaching their maximum-population, carrying capacities of drinkable water and infrastructure.

Scizophrenia is a brain disease . It is known to run in families. It can occur in people with trisomies. So can people on the autism spectrum. It can occur from single-strand chromosome breaks as cysic fibrosis and cerebral palsey can.

Hurricane, climate change, and nuclear unpreparedness.

A friend went to an annual Hurricane EduCation Day at his local Parish fairgrounds, sponsored by THE Local Walmart. He said they had storm window displays. A public health table. Free hot dogs. Gave away a Tv. Fire Dept there. How to evacuate alzeimers people and more.The parish has refineries and gambling.

It is a town in Louisiana that is the parish seat with 38,000 people. It is in one the most flood prone and dangerous hurricane area. It has only 3 fulltime fireman and 1 flood rescue boat. Other towns taht size have twice that many fulltime fireman but their govt funding is cut back.

Their greatest achievement since the last hurricane has been to get “In God we trust” inscribed on all 3 of the fire engines they have, in a large parish, where three towns have been destroyed by flooding this year populated by climate denialists who said god and the president said it would be okay to stay even though many are homeless from flooding and can never rebuild after 10 continupus years of flood rebuilding

They did have free hot dogs and cheap chips!

I told my friend to ask them about the nuclear power plant close to their town and, about Chagas the evening before he went.

He said he talked to a 21 yo girl at public health table. She said she knows chagas is epidemic in the united states . My friend said her older boss stepped over and said she could not talk about that.

There was a question and answer about refineries and how to evacuate for the next hurricane. My friend asked about nuclear power plants. They said there was bo risk to them.

He pressed it.
The local cops at the hurricane expo encouraged him to press the question of nuclear plants and hurricanes. The hurricane man from DHS got irritated at my friend and had him escorted him out of the pavillion by DHS guys

It is quite true. We in the west have been pumped-up and demoralized at the same time. Scared senseless by the threat of nuclear war. We see our friends and loved ones die at alarming rates from cancer and are told it could not be from the radiation. We see our friends and loved ones burned within an inch of their lives with radiation to treat cancer and are then lied to about what a great technology nuclear is.There is a normalcy bias for Japan. It is absolutely irrational because, Japan is going through the unprecedented, worst nuclear catastrophe in history. Nothing in Japan is Normal. What we get from Japan is The Smiley Face Talk scrip-book we are slammed over the head with constantly about how great Nuclear powered, nuclear armed developed countries are. How the great Developed Countries The nuclear United states and its vassal state Japan are the salvation of humans.

We get the projected happy talk of a Modern Industrialized Developed-Economy. Nothing could be further from the facts about the current state of Japan. It is the culmination of chemical and radioactive pollution. The last gasp of a country completely destroyed by nuclear catastrophe, like belarus from Chernobyl.
